HORNETS DO WELL IN GLASGOW

Last Sunday saw a group of 9 girls participated as Annan Hornets in the above tournament. This was a 6 way tournament which was run in parallel with the IRB International 7’s happening in the main arena.

We were pitched in a group with Murrayfield Wanderers and Ayr girls. Matches were a straight ten minute duration and commenced bang on time as any good 7’s tournament should.

On Saturday 28th of Feb a busload of female rugby players from Annan RFC set out on a trip to Edinburgh to take in the sights and sounds of the men’s international Scotland vs Italy in the 6 Nations tournament. Unfortunately the girls didn't witness a victory but enjoyed the experience all the same.

BIG MONTH AHEAD
MARCH 2015

HORNETS AND WARRIORS IN ACTION ALL MONTH

Last weekend saw the start of a busy month for Annan Hornets and Warriors with U15 and U18 Hornets attending a 6 a side tourney day at Dumfries. This involved us, Dumfries and Stewartry girls and allowed all to get some valuable game time. This also saw the new Magnox sponsored Hornets kit get its first airing.

This weekend sees a trip to Edinburgh on Saturday to take in the sights and sounds of Scotland vs Italy in the 6 Nations tournament.

Closely followed by the under 15s combining with Langholm to take part in a 7 a side tournament at Dalziel RFC on Sunday morning prior to attending the Scotland vs Italy Women’s international at Broadwood Stadium.

There they will be either playing at half time on the international pitch, or acting as ball girls, or the guard of honour for the teams coming onto the pitch. This all depends on the results of the mornings 7 a side competition.

We also have Caroline Aitken of the Warriors taking part in her 3rd West select v East select at Cumbernauld RFC prior to the International. This is aimed at a level just below the International squad and Caroline is very proud to have been selected again.

She is joined by 7 Stewartry Sirens in the squad of 25 which includes recent Scottish Internationalist and the cream of the West of Scotland.

The West squad is coached by I Hamilton (ARFC), Sandy Currie (Stewartry RFC) and B McMillan (Cartha QP RFC). These numbers show the strength of Women’s rugby in SW Scotland and are remarkable for a “non-rugby” area.

Forward to next weekend 7th and 8th March, where the U15s and U18s will travel to Biggar to take on the home club at both age groups. The Warriors may be combining with Inverness Dunain to play against Greenock Wanderers at Greenock on Sunday the 8th (this is still to be confirmed).

A definite the following weekend for the Warriors is the 6th and final National Development League day on Sunday the 15th. We expect to take 15+ for the first time and this will show how far we have come from our embryonic taster sessions in June last year.

4 hectic weeks which show the commitment required and the enjoyment that can be had by joining the Warriors or the Hornets on their continued climb up the ranks of Scottish (and world) rugby.

Feel free to come and spectate or join in any of the above events.

LADIES RUGBY ROUND UP
JANUARY 2015

ANNAN LADIES AT NDL WEEK 4

Around 30 ladies attended the NDL Week 3 Training Session at Violetbank on Sunday

On a bright, fresh but terribly cold (-2ºC) Sunday morning we set out from Annan to NDL4 at Penicuik. The session had been in doubt due to snow and frost but a bit of forward planning meant that there was a synthetic playing surface booked on standby for just such an eventuality.

11 girls were huddled together waiting for the coach and were more than happy to find the heater in working order. Two of our number were new to the NDL thus meaning that we have been represented by 16 women so far at these sessions.

22ND NOVEMBER 2014

LADIES EQUIP THEMSELVES WELL

UNDER 15's
This saw Annan Hornets U15s take on their Biggar rivals in 3 x 20 minute sessions at Violetbank.

Their first home game since forming in the summer. Both sides gave a good account of themselves with the Biggar girls, who have been playing together as a unit for 2 years, coming out on top in both the first 2 sessions.

The teams were then mixed for the final 20 minutes which gave a more competitive trial. All in all a very worthwhile outing for the fledgling Hornets.

UNDER 18's
At the same time on the 1st team pitch our U18s took to the field against Biggar RFC. This game went to similar pattern with the teams being mixed for the final session. Again a worthwhile exercise.

Many thanks are due to the girls from Dumfries who augmented our numbers, the Lindas in the Grubber, Gogs and Ali (from Stewartry Sirens) for reffing, the ladies in the clubhouse for the mince and tatties and all the players and coaches/parents from Biggar who came to Bank Street and made it an excellent day of old soon rugby banter.
