Annan veterans travelled to Cumbria on Saturday to play Workington 3rds, who turned out to have an average age of about 24 and were far fleeter of foot than their aged appoints, a fact they were to utilise to great advantage as became obvious from the kick off and within minutes Annan found themselves a try and conversion down.

The Vets responded by digging deep into their experience and putting in some immense tackles throughout the match. The Vets forwards started to gain the upper hand, notably in the set pieces and it was a forward who gave the Vets their first try when powerhouse lock Steve Lionel took the pass from Kenny Hogg at the base of a ruck and from 8m out crossed the line to ground the ball despite the attentions of a few opposition forwards. Neil Latimer added the conversion.

Further tries were scored by Archie Little who made a fine break to score and Neil Latimer made an equally good break and then there was a 'shared' try between Ian Anderson and Neil Halliday with Neil Latimer converting once more. A good all round team performance from the Vets despite their lack of match experience and a most enjoyable day was had by all.

The final tally up: Workington 6 tries and 5 conversions, Annan 4 tries and 2 conversions.

Team: 1 Alan'Curly' O' Hara, 2 Derek Savage, 3 Gordon 'Bruno' Brown, 4 Steve Lionel (cpt), 5 Jim 'Twig' Tweedie, 6 Ian 'Gut' Anderson, 7 Kierron Wateret, 8 Neil 'Cash' Halliday, 9 Kenny Hogg, 10 Neil 'Hairy' Latimer, 11 Steve Jancy, 12 Archie Little, 13 Alastair 'Babe' Graham 14 Tom Bird, 15 Collin Smith.

Annan’s veterans travelled to Carlise on Saturday to take on Creighton 2nds in a rearranged fixture and with a 19 man squad were able to provide the numerically challenged home team with several players to balance out the numbers. The mass and experience of the veterans proved too much for the home side and Annan scored 8 tries to Creighton’s one with stand off Neil Latimer converting 5 of the tries.

Annan tries were scored by Rod Ker, Andy Copland (3), Craig Moffat (2), Darren Irving and Neil Latimer.

Another milestone in Annan Rugby Clubs history was recorded on Saturday when the veterans took the field in their first game, having had two previously scheduled games called off. Expectation and eagerness was high (tempered with a little trepidation). Upper Eden kicked off and the first quarter passed with both teams testing each other and it was the Vets who opened the scoring with a practised "miss move" starting with the forwards securing ball about 25m from their line and feeding it out to the backs into the hands of Eddie Woodman who made a break for the line and showed great presence of mind to reach over and ground the ball having been tackled on the line, unfortunately he had to leave shortly after due to injury. Dougie Pagan converted giving Annan a 7-point lead. Upper Eden responded almost immediately with a converted try of their own and that's how the score remained at half time.

Annan started the second half in the same vein as the first half and were rewarded with a try by Jason Graham coming from a forward drive. This try was unconverted. Again Upper Eden responded with a converted try and started to pressure for more but due to some immense tackling (one excellent try saving tackle by Mike McGarva on a forward twice his size) Eden were unable to cross the Annan line. In the final quarter Annan seemed to get a bit desperate to level the scores, which resulted in them committing basic errors and conceding two penalties which Eden gratefully kicked to end the game Annan 12 Eden 20. Despite the score line all Annans’ players can hold their heads high in this their first game. The clocks were duly turned back and there were flashes of past brilliance, which can only get better as the side "gels" together. Annan entertained Upper Eden royally in the clubhouse after the match. Antics and scenes which haven't been seen in the club for many a year!!!! Any over 35 former or would be player interested in playing either come along to "training" on Sundays at 12.15pm or call Steve Lionel on 01461 700219. All will be made welcome.
