ANNAN 23 V GLASGOW LADIES 12
SUNDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2004

After a long layoff Annan Ladies started this Division 2 game of the SWRU leagues at Violetbank on Sunday looking fresh and determined. Using the wind in the first half Alison Cook laid siege to the Glasgow line with some thundering kicks after some sterling work by the home forwards. Turning over possession from the visitors the home forwards won quick ball 5 metres from the Uni line to set up No 8 Cindy ‘Thorn in your side’ Little to drive over and score her first try of the day.

With the home backs outmatching the visiting backs for pace Annan always made the gain line. From some fine scavaging from Lisa Ritchie and Terri Little, Mel ‘Never Give Up’ Eggleton fed the ball to Petrina Sidebottom to storm over the try line from the 22 carrying three Uni players with her. Annan took their foot off the gas pedal and allowed the visitors back into the game. Some slack tackling let the Uni Ladies to score two quick tries just before half time, one of which was converted, to take them into a half time lead at 10 – 12.

Feeling aggrieved at being behind after dominating the first half Annan raised the bar in the second half and played arguably their best rugby for some time. Recycling the ball after four or five phases and also using the blind side option to great effect they stormed back into the game. Cindy Little drove play deep into the Uni half and when she looked to be running out off ‘puff’ just short of the line Mel Eggleton and Petrina Sidebottom added their considerable bulk to drive Cindy over the line to score her second try of the day giving Annan back the lead. Annan were quickly back into the visiting half and from a quick ruck the ball was popped up to Alison Cook who changing the angle of attack sent Petrina Sidebottom over for the last try of the game. With 3 minutes to go a well struck penalty award taken by Alison Cook finished off the visitors.

This was a greatly improved Annan team performance and the Ladies may feel justly proud that their hard work at training is starting to pay off.
