MATCH REPORTS AND SUMMARY
Annan’s Violetbank was the setting for the second Annual end of season youth tournament. With the pitches in excellent condition & the sun shining as the pitches were made ready for the start of the day the coaches and players were hopeful for some good weather to play rugby in, but as this is Scotland the hope was a slight one .
As the visiting teams from Dumfries, Stewartry, Langholm, Moffat, Newton Stewart, Cumnock, Wayside Drumpellier, Ayr arrived so did the wind – which did its best to keep the rain at bay (a welcome change from last season)
U15 TOURNAMENT
The U15 10 a side Tournament kicked off with hosts Annan taking on local rivals Dumfries.
Annan 0 v Dumfries 36 - Dumfries continued there recent good form & overcame a determined Annan team. Dumfries were able to convert pressure into points where as the home team who did very little wrong but were unable to cross the whitewash.
Cumnock 5 v Langholm 17 - Cumnock started well with some fine handling saw a good sweeping move stopped short by some determined Langholm tackling , Langholm then showed some fine attacking rugby of their own and playing similar to 7’s shipping the ball to one wing then the other before finding a gap to score , this spurred Cumnock on & they responded almost immediately from the kick off, crossing out wide. Two quick fire Langholm tries saw the contest over with Langholm through to the next round & Cumnock into the bowl .
Annan Barbarians 29 v Moffat 0 - The team made up from a mixture of players had their first game of the day & played some outstanding rugby and were far to powerful for Moffat , with scrums, rucks and handling far superior to Moffat Annan were able to run in tries almost at will progressing though to the next round.
WD 0 v Ayr 51 - Ayr stormed through the first round with an excellent display of how to find space & score tries with WD unable to offer any resistance to a exceptionally strong Ayr team .
Bowl Game 1: Annan 12 v Cumnock 24 - For Annan’s second game of the day they dug in deep and produced a very good display scoring 2 tries in the first half and turned around to have the wind in the second half all square . However the players on the pitch were unable to find time enough to kick resulting in being held in their own half for the rest of the game with Cumnock crossing the try line twice with no reply – Cumnock progressed to the final
Bowl Game 2: Moffat 12 v WD 29 - Moffat started well but faded enabling WD to progress to the final after a powerful display of running rugby.
Bowl Final: Cumnock 47 v WD 10 - The score line flatters Cumnock some what as WD pushed Cumnock hard for 10 of the 15minute game before Cumnock ran in 4 unanswered tries to take the Bowl in a good game of free flowing rugby
Cup Semi Final 1: Dumfries 29 v Langholm 0 - Dumfries, for the second time, powered past local rivals proving to be too strong in the ruck & to fast in open play showing some fine handling and off loading to move into the final without conceding a point.
Cup Semi Final 2: Annan Barbarians 0 v Ayr 39 - Ayr eased into the final after giving an excellent display of open flowing rugby breaking the gain line & off loading to deprive a strong Baba’s team of any ball.
Cup Final: Dumfries 10 v Ayr 15 - Dumfries got of to a good start scoring 2 tries in the closely contested first half taking full use of the weather to keep Ayr pined in their own 22 with some fine kicking & powerful running . The second ½ was a complete turn around with Ayr doing the exact same to Dumfries and with only seconds remaining Ayr crossed for the winning points to disappoint a very useful Dumfries team
