RESULTS AND THE ANNAN FESTIVAL
1ST MAY AND 22ND MAY 2011

ANNAN U14 TIGERS 3 v PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS 49

Already weakened by having a team at a 7s tournament in Glasgow, several no shows meant only 13 were able to take the field against a very strong, well drilled u13(Sept 2010) Preston team.

The boys were up against it from kickoff and despite a lot of spirited resistance tries were conceded at regular intervals.

With some opposition help the dam was stemmed a little in the 2nd session and Annan got on the score sheet in the 3rd session with an excellent try from Callum Smith who ran in with great determination from 40 metres. Well done to the boys for sticking in for the whole game against a really top class team.

P6/7 REPORT – DUMFRIES SAINTS RUGBY FESTIVAL
20TH MARCH 2011

Sunday 20th March saw the long awaiting first outing of the year for the P6/7 team. The team travelled to Park Farm to take part in a rugby festival hosted by Dumfries Saints. Having 13 players in the squad it was a great turn out. The format was a round-robin contest with Annan playing 6 games in total against teams from as far away as Cumnock, Newton Stewart and Musselburgh. With 10 players starting, the first game was against hosts Dumfries.

Physically Dumfries were the bigger team but even with Annan fielding P6 and P5 players in the squad, the game was pretty evenly matched. Annan’s strength was in their handling and offloading and were able to get the ball away from the tackle area quickly to keep the pressure on Dumfries. Gaps appeared in the Annan defence when Dumfries drove the ball forward. Saints were able to take advantage of this and score. Annan in their credit battled hard and tackled well but were unable to turn pressure by Jake Lamont, Christian Hannah and Neil Smith into points.

Out of 6 games Annan drew 1 lost 5 (two only by 2 scores). Positive areas for the Annan players to take from this was their determination and spirit as it never gave up throughout the day. This being their first games after only two training sessions many coaches praised their handling abilities and attitude to fair play which was a credit to themselves and the Club.

All the players deserve the Man-of-the Match award as each of them gained achievements in their playing ability and attitude to the game during the day, well done to all. Try scores for the record were Neil Smith (1) and Tyler Anderson (1)

With no games this week for P6/7, training continues at Violetbank on Thursdays from 6pm - 7pm.

TIGERS START WITH A WIN
26TH FEBRUARY 2011

Annan Tigers S1/2 resumed the season with a hard fought win away to Moffat. Annan travelled to Moffat with 19 players all looking forward to their return to playing.

Annan opened the scoring early on with a well worked move finished off by Ieuan Keir who powered over in the left hand corner. Following some good interplay Joe Pagan broke through a ragged Moffat line to score almost under the posts - Cairn Wallace converted. Annan finished the half with some powerful running & offloading in the tackle, which saw Ieuan Keir over in the same corner for his second, converted by Wallace.

With some changes made at half time Moffat came out much stronger , scoring out wide on the right. From the resulting kick off Annan pushed hard through the powerful centre combination of Keir & Gough.

With the Moffat defence pulled wide Mitchell Townson scrambled over for Annan's 4th try –which was again converted. This sparked a Moffat revival & some good breaks by the no 1 & 4 saw two quick tries for Moffat - both converted.

With the game nicely balanced some more powerful play by man of the match Harry Millar saw Annan once again on the front foot leading to Ieuan Keir completing his hat trick, this time in the right hand corner, Wallace added the conversion for a final score of Annan 19 Moffat 15.

A really enjoyable game of rugby played in the Moffat sun was enjoyed by spectators of both sides

U16'S IN ACTION
14TH NOVEMBER 2010

Despite the scoreline this match against a Youth team based at Ambleside was keenly contested.

Annan started slowly- the 11am KO obviously too early for some! - and poor tackling allowed the visitors a two try start.

Annan then proceeded to play their best rugby of the season and would have taken a lead into half time but for poor decision making close to the opposition try line. They continued to exert pressure in the 2nd half but again were unable to penetrate a tough visitors defence. The Barbarians finished the stronger of the two and wrapped up the win with 2 late tries.

Annan were much improved from earlier games. The lineout was good and the tackling mostly solid and more aggressive than of late.

Rucks are still not contested vigorously enough with too many forwards watching play unfold. Similarly the scrum is too loose and there were too many turnovers conceded from this

The backs, at last, were brought into play and made some good breaks in midfield. They were also guilty of running sideways when simple passing would have given the wingers more time and space.

The team undoubtedly benefited from more evenly matched opposition and it was good to see 21 boys involved.

Next game is this Sun at home against Penrith U16 (Different Penrith team from that faced 3 weeks ago) KO 1.00 meet at Violetbank 12.00

BOTH THE TIGERS AND U16'S IN ACTION

TIGERS JUST LOSE TO STEWARTRY

The Tigers just lost to a strong Stewartry team. Annan ran in 5 tries.

The League now takes a break until March but training is to continue on Sat mornings at Violetbank 10-12.

Match Report

LANGHOLM TOO STRONG FOR THE U16'S

Another tough game for the Annan lads who never gave up but were totally outplayed by an impressive Langholm team.

Too many missed tackles and a general lack of dynamism and teamwork were Annan's downfall.

Better attendances at training are vital to improve these areas.

Next game is this Sun at home to Westmorland Barbarians u16 ko 11am players to meet at Violetbank at 10am

31ST OCTOBER 2010
S1/S2 TIGERS WIN

This week Annan played well from the start and were deserving winners of an entertaining game by 6 tries to 4

Forwards and backs combined well and there were storming runs from Ieuan Keir, Callum Smith and Drew Gough.

Joe Pagan showed up well on debut and Liam Jamieson took over kicking duties with success.

Overall though this was a good team performance, showing the benefit of regular coaching and games

Scorers Tries - Drew Gough (3) Callum Taylor, Callum Smith and Joe Pagan. Conversions - Liam Jamieson (3) and Ion Clark (1)

U16'S HOSTED PENRITH

The U16's took on Penrith in their debut game and despite the large score line (107-0) Annan battled to the end.

From the Penrith RFC Website:

Annan fielded a team of 16s/17s in a friendly with Penrith u17s on Sunday. Penrith proved to be too well drilled against the Annan side but the hosts never looked like quitting for the whole 80 minutes. The fixture was very one-sided against some very keen rugby players who just need more game time together in order to improve their defensive play. Annan made great hosts for this fixture and a return match is to be arranged for later in the season. This is the first game where Penrith have had a 3 figure score against another team but I have to say the score line did not match the commitment level or play by the Annan team.

Training for Coaches and Helpers:

SRU are rolling out a coaching initiative that is required for all coaches or persons who assist in the delivery of Coaching of Rugby.

This is "Rugby Ready" Course and is being provided on Monday 20th September at 6pm Violetbank 2hrs duration.

All those who are coaches and those who assist/supervise/pop-by should attend as it enables access to the Level 1 coaches course to those that want to progress but also gives everyone the grounding on how to deliver effective training sessions as well as the basics to the game. The more the better as SRU record the stats of how many trained coaches the Club has.

NEW SEASON
31ST AUGUST 2010
Training starts on Tues 31st at 7pm

We are now up to 57 members and still looking for help at coaching sessions. Aim is to get a minimum of 2 coaches for each age group (3 age groups) each training night with 3-4 helpers being long term aim. The youth teams will get better quality coaching with more support.

The P6/7 and S1/2 age groups will train and play until mid/end November.

U15-U17 age group will be following the normal senior season.

Even one night a month makes all the difference to help those that are providing the coaching at the moment. We now have the players we just need more coaches.

The current crop of U17's will be eligible to play for 1st and 2nd team in 18-24mths. To ensure they get the the skill levels the 1st team need we need to invest the time to develop them to their full potential.
