ANNUAL END OF SEASON CLASH
4TH MAY 2014

MEERKATS ALMOST GET THEIR 1ST WIN

Match Report By Alan Robertson

ANNAN OVER 35s (ĎTHE GRIZZLIESí) 15 v ĎANNAN UNDER 25s (ĎTHE MEERKATSí) 14

Match Photos / Match Highlights

In a match which annually brings the curtain down on Annan RFCís season and provides a showcase for Annan RFC past and future players this was, once again, a thoroughly entertaining spectacle served up at a cold and breezy Violetbank on Sunday.

Whilst not the Ďtryfestí of the previous two years (46-91 in 2012 and 40-48 in 2013 in favour of the Grizzlies) the quality of rugby on display, considering the age gap, was surprising albeit the Grizzlies did display a propensity for knocking the ball on when the delivery was below waist high (well bending down is a little more difficult as you reach middle age!)

The match was played in 20 minute quarters to allow the Grizzlies some well deserved recovery time and it was well into the second quarter before the deadlock was broken and it took a beautifully flighted kick by stand off Niall Smith (yes you still have it Niall) behind the Meerkatís defence and centre Rob Currie won the race to the touchdown to score. The conversion was missed.

The Meerkats were playing a wide game in an attempt to stretch the Grizzliesí defences and in a flowing backs move they did just that with winger Bruce Jamieson touching down. With standoff Cairn Wallace adding the extra 2 points the Meerkats took the lead! Half Time score Grizzlies 5 Meerkats 7

The Meerkats stretched their lead further in the third quarter when centre Adam Torbett broke out from the Meerkatís 22, and despite some despairing tackles from the Grizzlies, wove his way to the line to score. Cairn Wallace again added the extras to give the Meerkats a 9 point lead.

The Grizzlies were not to outdone however and with their forwards dominating the set piece and the rucks it was not long before they struck back when lock Neil Wallace drove over from the back of a ruck to cross the whitewash. The conversion was missed and the Meerkatís lead was reduced to 4 points.

The Grizzlies were to have the last word, however, when from a defensive mix up when a loose ball kicked through was not dealt with and No 8 Billy Henderson pounced to score. The conversion was missed. Final Score Grizzlies 15 Meerkats 14.

So over the last three years the score line in this highly entertaining tussle has narrowed from a 45 point gap to just 1. Who would bet against a Meerkats win next year! The final score was immaterial as players and spectators alike left Violetbank safe in the knowledge that the future of rugby in Annan was in safe hands.

One additional point of interest, in a season which saw four sets of fathers and sons take part in a game another father and son partnership was on display on Sunday with Neil Wallace and son Cairn taking to the field of play.

After the match players and spectators alike made their away to the Clubís clubhouse to partake in mince and tatties and some liquid refreshments. In the case of the Grizzlies they also relived some of their former exploits in their aprŤs match reveries which went on long into the night!

ANNAN GO DOWN
3RD MAY 2014

CLOSE BUT NOT QUITE FROM ANNAN

The 1sts go down 28-26 in their last game of the season. The Annan points came from an Andrew Jancey (T), Kevin Jones (T) and Craig McCann (4P, 2C)

Two mile stones were reached in this game. Captain Craig McCann kicked himself past the 1500 point mark for his 1st XV career and now stands on 1514.

The second was this was the last game in an Annan 1st XV shirt for Kevin Jones. And he closed his Annan career in style with a well worked try. Thanks for all you commitment and dedication Mr Jones. Going to be a hard man to replace!

THE 1STS DRAW WITH ACCIES
15TH FEBRUARY 2014

5 TRIES AND 3 POINTS FOR ANNAN

The 1st XV draw with Accies 34 all at a wet and windy Violetbank.

Annan took an early lead with a penalty but Accies then hit back with 2 quick tries to lead 12-3.

Annan looked like a team that hadn't played for 4 weeks but they regrouped and Colin Warrick scored one of his trademark tries to take the scores to 12-8 after 20 minutes.

The teams then traded tries. First Accies then Annan through full back Kevin Jones. This took the half time score to 17-15 and all to play for in the 2nd half.

The 2nd half was much of the same with the teams trading tries. First Annan, to take the lead (through a Ryan Glass try), then Accies and then a John Nelson try with 20 to go made it 27 all.

Accies regain the lead but with 1 minute to go a hack through and touchdown from Alex Halliday made it 34 all and thats how it ended up!

What a game, and 3 points to Annan.

For the record the other Annan points were from the boot of Captain Craig McCann (1P, 3C)

THE 1ST XV WIN BUT ONLY JUST!

In the early part of the 1st half, the teams traded penalties and it was not until the 15th minute that the 1st try was scored but alas it came from Lenzie who took a 10-3 lead.

Annan though hit back through a great try from Alex 'Willix' Halliday on his first start of the season for the 1st XV and what a welcome return it was!

The teams then traded penalties again to take the game to 13-13 before Lenzie rumbled over the Annan try line to take a 20-13 lead into half time.

The 2nd half started off with a bang with an early Kevin Jones try to take the score to 20-18.

For the next 15 minutes the sides traded the ball on numerous occasions but there was no further score until Jonny Callaghan was on hand to score a great try to take the score to 23-20. Craig McCann kicked the conversion (to add to his 2 penalties and 1 conversion) to take the score 25-20 with 15 minutes to go.

Lenzie hit back straight away though with a run in from 5 yards to tie the score 25-25 to set up a frantic last 10 minutes.

Annan edged ahead thanks to another penalty kick from Captain Craig McCann with 2 minutes to go and that was that!

A great win for Annan who keep their 100% record over Lenzie but what a game and finish!

GOOD DAY AT THE OFFICE
16TH NOVEMBER 2013

FIRST XV RECORD THEIR 3RD LEAGUE WIN OF THE SEASON

The 1st XV get a great win over second place Helensburgh 18 v 13 in their latest Regional League West 1 game.

Annan led at 12-3 half time though 2 well worked Kevin Jones tries and a Craig McCann conversion.

In the 2nd half an early Craig McCann penalty made it 15-3 and that the way the score stayed for most of the 2nd half but with 10 minutes to go, Helensburgh scored a converted try to make it a nervy last 10 minutes.

A Craig McCann penalty settled some nerves and despite a late Helensburgh penalty, the boys held on to record their 2nd home win and 3rd league win of the season. Final score: Annan 18 v Helensburgh 13

Well played lads!

THE 1STS WIN AT HOME
26TH OCTOBER 2013

THE 1STS BEAT KILMARNOCK

The 1sts win 20 v 17 against old rivals Kilmarnock in their latest RBS West 1 league game to record their 1st home league win of the season.

Annan were 14-0 down at halftime after 3 Kilmarnock penalties and an unconverted try but came out all guns blazing in the second half.

First there was a well worked try from John Nelson (1st try of the season) and then Sean Haren scored the 2nd try to make the score 14-14 and so with 25 minutes remaining it was anyone's game.

Annan took the lead with a Craig McCann penalty with 10 mins to go but Kilmarnock hit straight back with a penalty of their own. This set up a very nervy finish to the game. But with 3 minutes to go, Craig McCann held his nerve to slot the winning penalty to win the game for Annan 20-17.

And Annan get their 2nd league win of the season! Well played boys!

The half time score was 10-3 to Allan Glens who had scored 2 well worked tries. Annan hit back however in the 2nd half with a Bruce Jamieson try.

For the majority of the 2nd half it was both teams trading penaltis with Annan making it 14-16 with 5 mins to go to set up a frantic finish but it was Allan Glens who scored the last points of the game with a try and conversion to take the final score to Annan 14 v Allan Glens 23.

5TH OCTOBER 2013

KILMARNOCK JUST TOO STRONG

The 1st XV were knocked out by West 1 rivals 43 v 12 in round 1 of the West Regional Shield.

In the 1st half it was always close, with Kilmarnock only slightly stretching away after an interception try when Annan were pressing the Kilmarnock try line. Half-time score: 14-6 (Craig McCann kicking the 2 Annan penalties)

In the 2nd half it was a scrappy affair but Kilmarnock were always on top with Kilmarnock scoring 5 further tries and Annan only responding with 2 McCann penalties. Final score: 43 v 12

Ah well, the trip to Murrayfield will have to wait another year!

ANNAN LOSE BUT ONLY JUST
21ST SEPTEMBER 2013

ANNAN GET A LOSING BONUS POINT

The 1sts lose but get a losing bonus point in their latest league game.

After a very tight 1st half which ended 3-0 to East Kilbride, Annan kicked 2 penalties (2 x Craig McCann) before East Kilbride scored a converted try to take it to 10-6 with 15 minutes to go.

The last 15 was a nervy affair with both teams coming close to scoring but alas it was not to be.

Annan will take great encouragement though from the game as they were very unlucky not to win and had a try ruled out by the referee who was alas unsighted to the touchdown.

The 1sts now travel to old rivals Lenzie next weekend where a win for Annan would take them off the bottom.

ANNAN RFC LOOK FORWARD TO NEW SEASON IN RBS WEST 1

PRESIDENT DAVE FISHER ON THE YEAR AHEAD

After a remarkable season last year Annan can look forward to the new season in West 1 with some confidence. Club President Dave Fisher commented ĎWe feel that we can be competitive in the RBS West 1 League after our promotion from RBS West 2 last season.

The manner of promotion with a 100% record, 860 points scored with over 100 tries, has imbued the squad with a winning mentality, confidence in their ability and great team spirit. The squad is still young and in most positions there is greater strength in depth than for some time.

The fixtures draw has also been kind and we will have 6 home games in the first half of the season. This will undoubtedly benefit us as the team thrives on the firm ground conditions that will hopefully prevail in the early autumn.

There is also no relegation from RBS West 1 this season due to yet another league reorganisation, and this should allow the side to play with the freedom shown last year

Most of the other sides are well known to us and we expect the games to be played with a greater intensity than last season. We feel that our skill levels are capable of rising to this challenge and overall are quietly confident of another successful season.’

With the first league game some two weeks away the Annan Coaches Neil Moffat and Niall Smith are keen to get their troops battle ready and along with The Violetbank 15-aside Tournament this Saturday they have also arranged a couple of tough friendlies against Langholm (13th August) and Dumfries (20th August). They also have the small matter of a preliminary round match against Waysiders Drumpellier on 24th August at Violetbank in the RBS Shield West.

Annanís first league fixture is on 31st August at home to last season’s runners up GHK
