6TH MAY 2006

KILMARNOCK SEVENS TOURNAMENT

Annan managed to gather together nine hardy souls to compete at the Kilmarnock Sevens at Bellsland on Saturday, with Gavin Lynch home on leave from the RAF and Duncan Fisher borrowed from Stirling Uni.

Annan took time to settle against Carrick in Round 1 but once they got it together they ran out easy winners 34-0.

Round 2 saw Annan face the hosts who had won the Dumfries 7s tournament in April. This was a harder game for Annan but their determined defence saw them run out winners by 14–0.

The semi final was against Ardrossan and could have gone either way but Annan didn’t have any luck with a few refereeing decisions and were somewhat unlucky to lose 21–7.

This was a gutsy display by the Annan team and it was generally agreed that with a bit more fitness they could have gone further. However they would have struggled to beat the eventual winners Hillhead Jordanhill, who had former Annan player Andrew Eggleton in their ranks, as they looked a classy team with loads of pace and skill.

Overall this was a good effort from the Annan squad and they could not be faulted for their effort and commitment.

Annan Squad: Billy Henderson, Neil Moffat, Bruce Blower, Keith Hogg, Duncan Fisher, Kevin Jones, Michael Griffin, Gavin Lynch and Michael Carpenter.

COLTS FINISH SEASON IN ARRAN

The Colts with a few youngsters and some female friends enjoyed an excellent end of season trip to Arran. A 6.45a.m.start was called for and all went smoothly. The game was good which Annan won after lending Arran some players. It was the coaches pleasure to take this group for an away day party. Their behaviour was 1st class as was their discipline on the pitch all season which has been commented on by opposition coaches and referees alike. The singing started at Ardrossan on the way back and never stopped until Lockerbie. We indeed have a new legend!

In the semi final Annan beat Garnock 34-12 to set up a final against Hamilton who they beat 52 – 7.

This was a real team effort with all 10 members of the squad contributing to the win.

ANNAN’S U17 INTERNATIONALISTS SCORE AT MILNFIELD TOURNAMENT

Annan RFC’s U17 Internationalists Andrew White and Bruce Blower both got on the score sheets at the Milnfield Tournament in Cornwall. Scotland were beaten 11-10 in their opening game against England A scoring two tries to one and were only beaten by a penalty in the dying minutes of the game. Andrew played the whole game with Bruce on the bench. In their second game against Romania Scotland won 37 – 0 with Bruce scoring a try with Andrew on the bench. In the final game against Canada Scotland lost 22 – 17 with Andrew scoring a try and adding a conversion with Bruce on the bench.

The Club are justifiably thrilled and immensely proud of their young internationalists and their Glasgow District representatives especially as it has not been one of the clubs better seasons at senior level but the future looks bright with Annan’s Youth Section providing so much quality.

ANNAN COLTS

After last weeks U16 disappointment the colts managed to progress to the final of the Glasgow Bowl. This was no mean feat having 5 U15 boys on the bench and with James Bigham (U15) playing all the game at No. 10 all the youngsters finished the game and were delighted to play for the Colts.

Annan, although never in danger of losing the game, struggled to get their game going due to numerous players being forced to play out of position this week. Winning the Semi-Final was all that was important though so it was job done and smiles all around at the final whistle. Try scorers this week were Chris Waddell (2), Dwayne Barnes (1) Alex Halliday (2). Alex added a conversion.

The boys will finish off the season now with a trip to Stewartry Sevens tomorrow with the Players awards in the clubhouse at night. The Bowl final on the 29th April and an end of season party trip to Arran on May 6th – note that seats are available for supporters to go to Arran, contact the club or the players for details.

HAMILTON U15s 0 V ANNAN U15s 5

Annan U15s won a tense but hard fought battle against their counterparts at Hamilton on Sunday in the quarter final of the Glasgow U15 Plate competition at Laigh Bent. Annan had the edge in most facets of the game but were never able to extend their tenuous 5 point lead. Annan’s try was scored by winger Cammy McEwan during the first half and for the rest of the game, although both teams launched numerous attacks on eachothers’ lines neither was able to breach the whitewash. This was a fine team performance from these youngsters especially after their heavy defeat by Dalziel in the Cup.

Annan now play Allan Glens in the semi final of the Glasgow U15 Plate competition.

DUMFRIES COLTS 17 V ANNAN COLTS 28

This was the third time this season that these two teams have met and on each occasion Annan has emerged victorious in three highly competitive games against their local rivals.

Games have been few and far between since the turn of the year for the colts which may explain the lack of fluidity in this game, there again it may have been due to neither team wanting to give an inch to their opponents, as the game was played at a frantic pace.

Annan started well and Michael Scott scored on the right which was quickly followed by an Andrew Jancey try after a good phase of handling by forwards and backs. Dumfries came back strongly, as they always do, and Annan found themselves defending for long periods. Tries, however, were inevitable, and Dumfries scored three tries during the game. Annan had to rely on Andrew Dunbar to score two of his trademark long range tries aided by the trust boot of Connor Trant to secure victory.

There was lots of effort from both teams in this match and a hard game for the younger boys who were playing their first game for the Colts. A special thanks is due to the boys from Annan who played for Dumfries in order to keep the teams numerically equal.

ANNAN XV 31 V BRAMLEY PHOENIX 10

This quickly arranged friendly gave the Annan players a chance of a work out after a period of inactivity, and the mixture of 1st & 2nd XV players proved too strong for the Yorkshiremen.

Annan scored 5 tries and 3 conversions – according to the referee, though the players claimed 6 tries. Scorers were Michael Griffin, Colin Warrick, Billy Henderson and Craig McCann, with McCann adding three conversions.

Annan team: S Kelly, P Carruthers, C Warrick, J Nelson, G Hogg, W Henderson, N Moffat, N Halliday, K Hogg, C McCann, A Render, M Griffin, J Crowther, R Copland, R Johnstone, C Hay, A Rae, S Wyllie, M Pattinson, N Bell.

HAWICK WANDERERS 20 V ANNAN COLTS 14

The Annan boys wanted to test themselves against one of the strongest teams in the borders and but for an unfortunate knock-on in the final minute would have won the game. A tremendously spirited performance this week with hopefully a successful cup run to come. Many heroes surfaced on Saturday. Michael Scott was outstanding along with Ryan Gracie and Johnny Crombie in at forwards. Sam Rogers gave his usual 200%, Mark Clark carrying an injury did very well at No 9, Alex Dunbar scored all Annan’s points with 2 tries & 2 conversions. Andrew Jancey was as honest and hardworking as ever with Euan Braid and Bruce Blower (Frae the toon) very impressive. This week saw debuts from Jamie Harrison, Scott Nicholson and James Bigham for the big team. All did really well.

ANNAN U16’S 21 V DUMFRIES U16’S 7

Once the usual helping of local derby nerves had settled it was clear that both sides would produce rugby worthy of any senior game. A big and well drilled Dumfries unit made Annan face some stern tests in the set piece with quality ball harder than normal to come by. Never the less Annan opened the scoring with a well worked try which in line with the share of play was equaled by Dumfries. In a game which needed all the skills and effort from the training ground to secure victory Annan bagged two more tries to take the honours. If you missed this game then you missed a good game played by two teams playing well above their station.

Annan scorers: Alex Dunbar (2 tries), Conor Trant (try), Euan Black (3 conversions)

ANNAN U15’S 55 v DUMFRIES U15’S 14

Annan U15’s continued on their unbeaten way with a convincing 9 try victory over local rivals Dumfries. The visitors were unable to deal with the pace and power of the home backs allied to the ball wining skills of the Annan forwards.

Annan’s tries came from Jamie Harrison (3), Callum Bell (2), Willie Gray, Dean Gallimore, George Forrest, and James Bigham with James Bigham adding 5 conversions.

THE UNDER 17'S/COLTS WIN

It was good to get the show back on the road after a long layoff over the Festive season and although a bit rusty with the lack of match practice and fitness the players and their coaches were generally happy with their overall performance. With the cup competitions for all the youth teams only a month or so away it is important for all the players to get as much match practice as possible and that is the main focus of the coaches. Final score 17-7

Tries by Alex Dunbar, Sam Rogers and Michael Scott won the game with Connor Trant adding a conversion.

The Annan boys in general were slightly older than their Langholm counterparts. They were certainly bigger. After an eight week lay off the Annan lads were fantastic. It was good to see some players for the first time in a game situation. Before the game the players were reminded about doing the right things and ticking boxes, and new players like Reval McKenzie, Adam Carlyle, George Forrest and Kenny Little certainly did that. The ever impressing Willie Gray, Callum Jamieson and Mark Anderson did a good job and Craig Armstrong is getting better and better. The club has a special group of young lads in their coach’s opinion. Watch this space!
