THE 2NDS ALSO WIN AND STAY UP!
Annan’s second XV went into this game in the knowledge that if they lost they would be relegated to Division 5 (West) of the Scottish 2nd XV leagues. Just to add to the mixture was the fact that the same applied to their hosts so it was a winner takes all scenario. Annan started well and took the lead early on in the first half with a try from prop Andrew Gunning a lead which Annan never relinquished over the 80 minutes. Annan added to their score with tries from Captain Keiron Watret and veteran warhorse Neil Halliday with full back Connor Trant adding 3 penalties. The final score was East Kilbride 7 Annan 24 and Annan live to fight another season in Division 4 (West).

Annan got off to a good start and scored first with a try by Callum Jaimison but that was where it ended for the young Annan team. Dumfries came back with a vengeance but although the home side were the stronger side Annan gave as good as they got but just could not break down the efficient Dumfries defence. Annan’s backs played their socks off in this game but the forwards spent more time pulling theirs’ up.

THE COLTS WIN
Annan travelled up to the Greenlaw on Saturday, with an air of confidence, to face Stewartry in the first of the Glasgow U18 Shield ties. Under a dry, but overcast sky, the visitors took control of the game from the kick off, and remained in charge until the final whistle. First in for a score after some delightful handling was winger, C Coupland, the extras added by stand off, J Bigham, Next over the line, again after some good handiwork, was winger, W Gray. Another try before half time, this time for centre, J Harrison, conversion again by J Bigham. The score at the interval was 19-0 in Annan's favour.
After a slight reshuffle at half time, Annan managed to maintain their grip on the game, although, in all fairness Stewartry did persist in making the visiting youths work hard for their victory. Two tries were scored in the second half, the first by J Harrison, now playing at scrum half, then winger S McKenzie breached the line, conversion added by J Bigham. This was a comfortable win by a team who exuded confidence and looked happy with the ball in attack. Coaches decided to award a 'Man of the Match' but found it difficult to isolate a single performance, so decided to recommend the following for the award; S Nicholson, C Bell, C Armstrong, D Brooke, M Thompson, M Panczak, M Anderson, J Butler, D Wilkinson, C Jamieson, J Bigham, C Coupland, J Harrison, C Henderson, W Gray, A Carlyle, S McKenzie, K Little, G Forrest.
This Saturday Annan play Dalziel in Round 3 of the S.H.E National Cup competition at Violetbank in the only all National 1 encounter in the West section of the Cup competition. Annan have done the double over Dalziel in the league this season winning 22-10 at Violetbank in October and 18-13 at Dalziel Park in December. Going on Dalziels’ improving form this has all the ingredients for being a close game with the winner guaranteed a home fixture against a Premier club in the 4th Round.

Annan’s derby fixture with Langholm was postponed on Saturday with Violetbank waterlogged after a week of rain. Annan’s second XV’s league fixture against Whitecraigs also suffered the same fate.
With Garnock’s pitches at Lochshore flooded both Annan’s 1st & 2nd XVs were left without a game last Saturday so Annan are looking forward, weather permitting, to their local derby against Langholm on Saturday in Division 1 of the Scottish Hydro Electric National Leagues. Langholm won the away match at Milntown on 29th September 27 – 17 and Annan will be looking to make amends for that defeat on Saturday. Both teams have won their last three games so an exciting game is in prospect. The Annan selectors have gone with the same team as selected for the Garnock game:
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C) , S Kelly, B Blower, J Nelson, M Scott, E Braid, G Smith, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, A Dunbar, K Jones Replacements: J Callaghan, R Gracie, G Hogg

All games this weekend are postponed as all pitches are waterlogged.
Annan travel to North Ayrshire on Saturday to take on 2nd placed Garnock in the Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Garnock won the home encounter at Violetbank with a disputed last minute try on 22nd September and Annan would like to make amends on Saturday. However Garnock have only lost one game so far this season and that was to league leaders Falkirk at Sunnyside so Annan will have to be at their very best to take something from this game. The Annan selectors have had their deliberations made somewhat easier with the return from injury last weekend of Bruce Blower, Alex Dunbar, John Nelson and Graeme Hogg returning this week.
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), S Kelly, B Blower, J Nelson, M Scott, E Braid, G Smith, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, A Dunbar, K Jones Replacements: J Callaghan, R Gracie, G Hogg

Annan will be hoping to build on their fine victory over Greenock Wanders last Saturday. Garnock are presently sitting top of the league with only one defeat so far so Annan will have a tough task on their hands.
Annan 2nd XV squad: G Wylie, L Ogilvie, R Fulton, I Thorburn, K Watret, N Moffat, D Barnes, A.N. Other, A Rae, E Currie, D Wyllie, A Copland, B Hay, S Wyllie, C Trant. Replacements from: N Halliday, A Graham, D Graham, A Halliday, W Harrison, G Lynch

Annan’s scorers were Andrew Jancey (1T), Graham Smith (2T) and Craig McCann (1P, 2C)
THE 2NDS THUMP GREENOCK
The 2nds thump Greenock 57-0 in their latest league game. Nice.
Annan are at home again this weekend when they welcome Greenock Wanderers to Violetbank in their Division 1 fixture on the S.H.E. National Leagues. Greenock have had a poor first half of the season without recording a win and currently prop up the Division. In their fixture at Fort Matilda on 15th September Annan won by a single point (7-6) in a dour match played in miserable conditions and will hope to put in a better display at Violetbank on Saturday.
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), S Kelly, M Carpenter, R Gracie, E Braid, M Scott, G Smith, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, J Callaghan, K Jones Replacements: J Nelson, A Dunbar, A.N. Other

Annan 2nd XV Squad: G Wylie, L Ogilvie, J Tinning, N Bell, K Watret (C), W Henderson, D Barnes, I Thorburn, G Lynch, E Currie, G Williamson, A Copland, S Wyllie, D Graham, C Trant Replacements from: C Hay, Alistair Graham, N Halliday, J Carlyle, W Harrison, Andy Graham

THE 2NDS GAME IS OFF
The 2nds game is postponed as no referee could be found
THE 18'S GAME IS POSTPONED
The U18's game was also postponed as Kilmarnock could not raise a team
This Saturday sees the start of the second half of the league campaign with Annan welcoming Preston Lodge from Prestonpans. Annan’s half term report makes encouraging reading with Annan having played 11, won 7 lost 4 and with 31 points sitting in 3rd place in Division 1 of the S.H.E of the National Leagues. Annan’s visit to Preston Lodge on 8th September saw them beaten 31 -6 at Pennypit and Annan will be looking to reverse the result this Saturday at Violetbank. With Annan still without their recognized 2nd row with Graham Hogg and John Nelson still struggling with injuries the selectors have gone with Graham Smith and Michael Carpenter to fill the positions.
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (Capt), S Kelly, M Carpenter, G Smith, E Braid, N Moffat, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, J Callaghan, K Jones Replacements: R Gracie, A Dunbar, A.N. Other

YOUTH RUGBY
Annan U18s take on Kilmarnock U18s at Violetbank on Saturday with a 2.00pm K.O. All players to contact coaches with regard to arrangements.
The 1sts get a great result as they beat Hillfoots/Alloa 26-12. There were a number of firsts in this game: 1st win in Tillicoultry and 1st game when the ref was a women..
The Annan points came from Michael Scott (1T), Mark Clark (1T), Steve Kelly (1T), Kevin Jones (1T) and Craig McCann (3C). And that also means a bonus point. Not a bad day indeed.
THE 2NDS ALSO WIN
The 2nds also win - beating Helensburgh 22-3
THE 16'S DO WELL
With Annan’s U16’s game against Kilmarnock called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Bellsland it took quick thinking and a few phonecalls by Annan U16’s coach Ian Patterson who managed to arrange a game against Irvine U16s whose opponents Cambuslang had not turned up. So the squad set off for Irvine only to find, when they arrives at Marress that Irvine’s opponents had arrived. Irvine to their credit immediately arranged a triangular tournament between the three clubs.
In their first game against Cambuslang Annan emerged victorious with a 12-0 victory. Annan’s try scorers were Adam Carlyle and Craig Wilson with Scott Wightman converting one of the tries. In the second game Annan were up against a slightly stronger Irvine outfit but Annan upped their game and overcame their hosts with a 31-0 win. The try scorers for Annan were James Bingham (2), Callum Jamieson (2), and Callum Bell. Scott Wightman converted two of the tries.
This was an overall convincing performance by the improving Annan youngsters who showed good commitment and no little skill throughout the tournament. Special mention is due to N Graham and G Forrest who both had fine games. Annan’s team work was the key to their success. Special mention is also due to the travelling support and to Ian Patterson for arranging the games at such short notice.
Annan will be hoping to get their league campaign back on track after last Saturday’s disappointing performance against the league leaders at Violetbank, when they travel to Tillicoultry to take on Hillfoots/Alloa. Hillfoots/Alloa are an amalgamation, at senior level, of Division 1 Hillfoots RFC and Caledonia Division 1 Alloa RFC and this is their first season as an amalgamated club.
Annan have played Hillfoots several times over the years both in the league and cup and have always found that to come away with a win from Tillicoultry is a pretty tall order. The Annan selectors have made a couple of changes from last Saturday’s team with Graham Smith moving from the No8 spot to lock forward with Graham Hogg injured. Michael Scott moves into the No 8 slot with Neil Moffat covering the openside. Kevin Jones, who was un-available last week, returns to the full back berth with Jonny Callaghan on the bench.
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (Capt), S Kelly, J Nelson, G Smith, , E Braid, N Moffat, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, A Dunbar, M Griffen, K Jones Replacements: R Gracie, R Fulton J Callaghan
Match Reps: C McCann, N Galbraith, D Barty
Meet at Clubhouse at 10.30am for a 2.00pm K.O.
ANNAN 2NDS HOST HELENSBURGH AT VIOLETBANK
Annan 2nds take on Helensburgh 2nds at Violetbank on Saturday in Division 4 (West).
Annan 2nd XV squad: G Wylie, S Wyllie, M Carpenter, I Thorburn, B Henderson, N Bell, D Barnes, N Halliday, B Graham, G Lynch, G Williamson, D Wyllie, A Rae, D Graham, C Trant Replacements: A Graham, C Aird, R Copland, C Hay, L Ogilvie, E Currie, W Harrison

With Glasgow Hawks Colts having withdrawn from the Glasgow U18 League Annan Colts are left without a fixture this weekend.
Annan’s U16’s are due to play Kilmarnock u16’s at Bellsland on Sunday. All players are asked to contact their coaches regarding arrangements.
The 1sts go down 24-0 to Falkirk in their latest league game
Annan’s 2nd XV also had a bad day at the office with a resounding 5 try defeat at Dalziel in Division 4 (West) of the Scottish 2nd XV leagues. Annan played as well as they were allowed against a well organised and fitter Dalziel 2nd XV but rarely threatened the home line.
The only player who caught the eye was full back Conor Trant who consistently punches way above his body weight and should be an inspiration to his team mates. Annan need to be fitter and train together if they are to be a force in this competitive league.
This Saturday Annan take on the unbeaten league leaders Falkirk at Violetbank in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Annan and Garnock were the only teams to beat Falkirk last season and there is no doubt that the visitors will be out to avenge their defeat at Violetbank. After last weeks stunning victory at RHC in the capital the Annan coaches have made only two changes to the team with wing forward Michael Scott returning after his appearance in the Scotland U18 rugby league team last weekend with Neil Moffat on the bench and Jonathon Callaghan in at full back for the unavailable Kevin Jones.
Saturdays Match Day sponsors are Magnox North

The selectors have gone in the main with last weeks team with the only enforced change being Ewan Brain in for the injured Bruce Blower and Michael Griffen moved to the wing and Alex Halliday on the bench.

ANNAN COLTS AWAY TO WHITECRAIGS
Annan’s young colts squad travel to Newton Mairns on Saturday to take on Whitecraig Colts in their first league game of the season. All players to meet at the Clubhouse at 11.00am prompt.
Glorious sunshine at Park Farm heralded this pre-season workout as both teams were looking to sharpen up before the league campaign begins this Saturday, with National Division One Annan at home to Edinburgh University and National Division Two Dumfries heading north to Inverness to take on Highland. The trial match between the local rivals was played in three thirty-minute periods and Dumfries started the more strongly with lots of possession and coherent play. Annan’s defence was resolute, though, and the Violetbank team took an early lead with two penalties from Craig McCann. The two Dumfries power runners, Angus Lean and Kenny Henderson, were providing a serious threat to Annan and Lean bagged a try for Dumfries before Alex Dunbar set off on a mazy run to counter for Annan with a superb touchdown. A further McCann penalty took the score at the end of the first period to 16-7 in Annan’s favour.
The away team took the chance to blood some fringe players in the second period and it was Dumfries who got their noses in front with tries from Angus Lean and Alec Bryden, one of which was converted by Henderson. The score line after an hour was 19-16 in Dumfries’ favour.
Although the third period was fairly meaningless in terms of the final result, with Dumfries fielding their 2nd XV, Annan did run in four tries through Mark Clark, Craig McCann and a further two from Alex Dunbar. Three McCann conversions took the tally to 42-19 for Annan.
Annan worked hard throughout the 90 minutes and their superior fitness showed. On the training ground this week the forwards will have been working on producing quicker ball, having a more stable scrum and the coaches will be analysing the penalty count. One pleasing aspect was the link between Clark at scrum half and McCann at stand off and the work rate of all the Annan players was high.
This Saturday Annan travel to Park Farm to take on Dumfries in a trial match at 1st & 2nd XV level. This is Annan’s last warm up friendly before their league campaign starts on 1st September with the first ever visit to Violetbank of Edinburgh University in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues.
Annan 1st XV squad:
Annan 2nd XV Squad:
Meet at Clubhouse at 12.15pm for 2.00pm KO at Park Farm
The annual 15-a-side challenge for the Violetbank Shield, sponsored by TN Trawlers and Murray Bell, took place in atrocious weather conditions on Saturday. Nevertheless, there was a feast of entertainment for the fans and Hawick YM were worthy winners in the end.
Annan were slow out of the blocks and, despite having a number of scoring chance, lost out narrowly to Hawick YM who scored the clinching try almost on full time. There was a distinct improvement in Annan’s play in their other group matches as they defeated Stewartry 12-0 and Netherhall 16-0. The Annan squad will now be looking to sharpen up before their first league match at home to Edinburgh University on 1st September.
Full results from the Violetbank Shield:
League A
League B
In a keenly contested final Hawick YM put in a tremendous performance to defeat Langhom 8-0 with one try and one penalty.
MOFFAT 10's
With Moffat suffering from several teams calling off at the last moment the tournament was played in a 4 team league format. Annan beat Boroughmuir and Newton Stewart but were beaten by Dalkeith and Moffat with Moffat being the eventual winners of the tournament.

* Scottish Hydro Electric
The tournament is held in two leagues with the winner of each league meeting in the final.
The draw was made last Monday and is as follows:
Group A
Group B

MOFFAT 10'S
As well as taking part in the Violetbank Tournament Annan RFC are also represented at the annual Moffat 10s tournament on Saturday.
The Annan 10’s squad for the tournament:
Annan’s trial game against Ross High at Violetbank last Saturday played in four 20 minute sections was deemed an extremely useful workout by the Annan coaches. The trial, while played in a constant drizzle, was a fast flowing affair with both sides trying to play open rugby. The visiting forwards proved quite a handful for their Annan counterparts in the set piece play with Annan in particular struggling to get to grips with their lineout play.
However Annan’s pace behind their forwards proved too strong for their visitors with the hosts running in 6 tries over the 80 minutes with tries from centre Alex Dunbar, scrum half Mark Clark, No 8 Graham Smith, winger Alex Halliday, hooker Stewart Wyllie and wing forward Bruce Blower. Centre Craig McCann had an impressive game with the boot landing 6 conversions out of 6. Ross High scored an interception try in the third quarter to take the final score to Annan 42 Ross High 7.
All in all a satisfying workout but the Annan coaches had plenty to work on with several areas of play to be worked on.
Annan’s preparations continue this Saturday when Tranent club Ross High visit Violetbank for a trial game. Annan have played Ross High on several occasions throughout the years and the games have always been highly competitive. Ross High will be playing their rugby in Division 1 (East) in the coming season having been relegated from Division 3. Annan have named a 27 strong squad for the trial.
Kick-off is 14.00
Annan Squad: Colin Warrick, Steve Kelly, Grant Wyllie, Michael Carpenter, Paul Carruthers, Stuart Wyllie, Graham Hogg, John Nelson, Bruce Blower, Neil Bell, Michael Scott, Euan Braid, Graham Smith, Mark Clark, Keith Hogg, Niall Smith, Craig McCann, Johnny Callaghan, Alex Dunbar, Andrew Jancey, Joe Crowther, Alex Halliday, Michael Griffen, Kevin Jones, Duncan Fisher, Gavin Lynch, Stuart Murray.
Meet at Violetbank at 11.30am.

VIOLETBANK SHIELD - 18TH AUGUST
Annan’s annual 15 aside tournament is fast becoming the must see pre-season tournament in South West Scotland and this year the host club will be defending their title after winning the tournament last season in some style. This year sees teams from Annan, Dumfries, Langholm, Stewartry, Hawick YM, Hawick Harlequins, Netherall and Wigton compete for the Violetbank Shield. The two league format is played in a round robin of 15 minutes halves with the two league leaders playing in the final of 20 minute halves.
At the beginning of last season Annan’s hope for the new season, after being relegated to Division 2 of the SRU National leagues was to consolidate in the Division and build on the youthful team for a return to Division 1 as soon as possible. Not even the most optimistic of home supporters thought that that the Annan side would bounce straight back up but that is exactly what they did.
Annan President Don Barty is relishing the prospect of playing again in National Division One which is where he feels the team belongs. "Being relegated the season before last was quite a blow for the Club, but last season they responded in style and bounced back with some exciting, flowing rugby - indeed some of the best rugby seen at Violetbank for many a year." Don was full of praise for the playing squad and the coaches." Last season's success was down to a fantastic effort by our coaches Kenny White and Paul Buckley allied to a style suited to a young squad who worked fantastically well to achieve success. Next season's team could be Annan's youngest ever, but I am sure they will give a good account of themselves and our prime aim is to consolidate again in National Division One, which contains some very good teams, including Falkirk and Garnock who were promoted along with ourselves and local rivals Langholm. It is important that we get off to a good start, but at least some of our lads have been experiencing summer sunshine in training. Alex Dunbar has been at a conditioning camp with Scotland Under 17s in Spain and Ryan Gracie, Michael Scott, Euan Braid and Mark Clark have been at a training camp in the South of France with the Glasgow Thistles Under 18s." The Annan President has one other wish for the season. "Apart from our aim of giving a good account account of ourselves back in National One, we want the players to continue to play entertaining, fluid rugby and entertain the fans at Violetbank. You can rest assured we'll be giving it our best shot and continuing to nurture our clutch of exciting young players"
Annan coach Paul Buckley is also looking forward to the new challenges of the season ahead and stated that “although the senior squad started pre-season training later this year, players have been working hard in groups since the beginning of June. Weights and fitness programmes have enabled them to improve their strength and stamina through the summer months and this has allowed the coaches to focus pre-season training on skills and technique interspersed with speed endurance training.
No one is under any illusion about what lies ahead this coming season in Division 1 but it is where we want to be playing our style of rugby and we are fully committed to doing our best and working hard throughout the season to ensure we a Division 1 team next year.
The pre-season games and the Violetbank Tournament will help us to prepare for the 1st September. We hope our supporters will help us to have an enjoyable start to the season and look forward to an exiting return to Division 1 rugby”
The Club officials elected for the coming season were:
