ANNAN FINISH LEAGUE CAMPAIGN WITH LOCAL DERBY AGAINST DUMFRIES AT VIOLETBANK
This Saturday Annan welcome Dumfries to Violetbank in both clubs’ last game of the season. Dumfries have had a great season and with Langholm, who were the only club who could have denied them promotion, beaten by East Kilbride last Saturday Dumfries have secured the 2nd promotion place behind Howe of Fife to Premier 3. With East Kilbride beating Cambuslang 13-10 mid week Annan are now secure in National 1 for next season.
Apart from the fact that this fixture is a local derby this fixture has an added incentive as the Annan club has put up a trophy for what is hoped will become an annual fixture. The trophy is the A.A. MacPherson Memorial Trophy and is in memory of the late Alex MacPherson (Mac) who died 2 years ago. Mac was President of the Annan club in 1983-84.

Annan were 7-3 down at half time but a try by Michael Griffin and points from the boot of Niall Smith ensured a vital win. Annan are now 14 points clear of Cambuslang and look likely to avoid relegation.
Cambuslang now need to win their 3 remaining games against East Kilbride (A), Berwick (H), Langholm (H), claim 3 bonus points and Annan have to lose to Dumfries for Annan to be relegated. Stranger things have happened but roll on Dumfries next week now.

WHITLEY BAY ROCKCLIFF 10’S TOURNAMENT
Annan were invited to the Whitley Bay 10’s tournament on Saturday and were one of 7 guest sides with Musselburgh and Annan representing Scotland with teams from Nortallerton, Hullensians, North Manchester, Bolton, Taunton and of course the hosts.
Annan were beaten in the first round by the All Stars by 4 tries to 3 and then went on to beat Bolton RFC 4 tries to 2 in the first round of the plate competition only to lose in the semi final to Hullensians RFC in the semi final by 4 tries to 3. The players who took part enjoyed themselves so much that they managed to arrange an invite for next year! Gavin Lynch, who organized the outing, was voted Annan’s Man of the Tournament. For the record Taunton RFC won the main tournament.
ANNAN BEAT VALE OF LUNE TROJANS
On Sunday Annan entertained a touring team from Vale of Lune RFC at Violetbank. The Trojans had been on a short tour to Edinburgh where they had played Lismore RFC on Saturday. Annan’s team was a mixture of youth and veterans with several of the latter not only having trouble finding their boots but also lacing them up! The rest of the team was made up of players who had been involved in the Whitley Bay Rockcliff Tournament and the après match festivities and had made it back in time!
The first half was a fairly even affair with Annan just edging ahead with a try by Gary Williamson. In the second half the visitors began to wilt after their weekend efforts and the home side ran in a further 4 tries scored by George Forrest, Billy Henderson and a brace from Keith Hogg. Gogs Carmichael added a conversion to take the final score to Annan Social XV Vale of Lune Trojans.

THE 1STS GAME IS POSTPONED
Annan’s Division 1 league match against Berwick in S.H.E. was called off just prior to kick off when the referee deemed areas of the Violetbank pitch were unplayable. Annan President Don Barty was understandably disappointed.
"It was a day of frustration when the Violetbank pitch was deemed to be unplayable shortly before kick-off time. We were confident that the match would go ahead and this is a real blow, with cancelled fixtures piling up. We had the Everholm as a back-up until late Friday afternoon when we were then told that it was unplayable. This winter's weather has been unbelievable and we are now seven matches in arrears. The season is scheduled for completion at the end of March, but re-arranged fixtures will now take us up to mid-May. If we progress from our Scottish Hydro Electric Shield game next month, the fixture pile-up is going to cause a real headache. We haven't played a league game for over two months, so here's hoping we have seen the back of games being called off. One small ray of sunshine last Saturday (if that's the correct expression in the current climate!) was that our Sponsors were taken up to Galabank and thoroughly enjoyed Annan Athletic's demolition of East Stirling! I look forward to seeing an oval ball again in the not-too-distant future!"

The 2nds game is called off as their pitch is frozen
ANNAN'S MASSIVE CUP CHALLENGE
Annan Rugby Club face a massive task when they host Premiership Division One side Currie RFC in Round 4 of the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup.
Currie lie 4th in the Championship and are three leagues above the Violetbank team and are the highest placed Premier team ever to visit Violetbank. Annan President Don Barty is appealing for a large crowd for this historic game and is under no illusions as to the magnitude of the task facing the home team.
"Firstly, it is a privilege to host Currie RFC at Violetbank. With the match kicking off at 1.30pm, we hope that the locals can really get behind the home team and perhaps then make their way to Galabank to take in the Annan Athletic game. Currie are a model Club in Scottish Rugby and they peaked in Season 2006-2007 when they won the Scottish Premiership - a fantastic achievement for a Club which was only formed in 1970."
The last Premier One side which Annan hosted was Jedforest on 13th February 1999 in Round One of the Shield competition at the Everholm.
Annan will have to be on top form to mount a challenge to the Premiership One team, a task not made any easier by the fact that the Violetbank side have only managed one game since mid-November due to weather conditions, but President Don is looking forward to the Cup Tie.
"It is always exciting to pit your wits against the big boys and, although this is a stern challenge, I know that our lads will give their all."
Annan will be hoping to improve on their performance on their last outing in Round 3 of the Cup where they struggled to overcome a stuffy performance by Braidholm of the Scottish Hydro Electric West Regional League Division 2. The match on Saturday is sponsored by The Halcrow Group.
Annan 1st XV Squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), R Gracie, G Hogg, M Carpenter, G Smith, E Braid, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, J Bigham, K Jones. Replacements: A Gunning, Alex Halliday, S Murray
Match Reps: D Barty, C McCann

ANNAN 2NDS TAKE ON LEAGUE LEADERS AT VIOLETBANK
Annan’s 2nd XV host league leaders Whitecraigs in Division 4 (West) of the Scottish 2nd XV leagues at Violetbank on Saturday. Annan were well beaten in their away encounter in September and will be looking to improve on that performance.

ANNAN SET OUT ON THE ROAD TO MURRAYFIELD
Annan, who join in to the S.H.E. National Cup competition in Round 3, have a trip to Giffnock on Saturday to take on Scottish Hydro Electric West Regional Leagues Division 2 Braidholm. Braidholm are essentially Premier 2 side G.H.A.’s 3rd string but will no doubt give it their all against an Annan team who are desperate to play a game of rugby. Their last game being their win at Violetbank on the 22nd November over RHC.
Annan 1st XV Squad: A Gunning, P Carruthers (C), R Gracie, G Hogg, J Nelson, G Smith, E Braid, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, J Bigham, K Jones. Replacements: M Carpenter, Alex Halliday, S Murray

ANNAN 2NDS TO PLAY STEWARTRY IN RE-ARRANGED LEAGUE GAME
With both games, home and away, between the two clubs postponed due to the weather the clubs will, this Saturday, attempt to get one of the games played. At the time of writing there appears to be some confusion as to whether the game will take place at Violetbank or Greenlaw. All players are therefore requested to contact the clubhouse on Friday evening if they have not heard before that time where the game is to be played.
Annan 2nd XV Squad: S Nicholson, C Bell, C Warrick, G Williamson (C), W Harrison, A.N. Other, I Thorburn, K Watret, J Harrison, A Carlyle, C Coupland, S Wyllie, A Copland, R Dunlop, G Lynch. Replacements: C Nicholson, G Johnson, Adam Halliday

ANNAN AT HOME TO PRESTON LODGE
With Annan’s last game of rugby being 22nd November against RHC the team are eager to get back into action this Saturday at Violetbank when they host Preston Lodge from Prestonpans in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Preston Lodge have not had the best of seasons so far and are currently sitting second bottom in the league with two wins out of fourteen games. One of those wins was last weekend when they beat RHC so Annan will have to be wary especially as their visitors have played for the last three weeks whilst Annan have been inactive.
The Annan selectors have, unsurprisingly, gone with the same team as selected for last weekend’s postponed game against Langholm.
Annan 1st XV Squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), R Gracie, J Nelson, G Hogg, G Smith, E Braid, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffin, J Bigham, K Jones. Replacements: A Gunning, M Carpenter, A Halliday
Match Reps: D Barty, I Gilmour, I Black

ANNAN 2NDS AT HOME TO KILMARNOCK
Annan’s 2nd XV are also at home on Saturday after being inactive last weekend when their game against Stewartry fell victim to the weather. This Saturday they play Kilmarnock 2nds at Violetbank in Division 4 (West) of the Scottish 2nd XV leagues.
Annan 2nd XV Squad: S Nicholson, C Bell, G Brown, G Williamson (C), W Harrison, D Barnes, I Thorburn, K Watret, J Harrison, A Carlyle, G Coupland, S Wyllie, S Murray, R Dunlop, G Lynch

STOP PRESS: THE 1STS GAME IS OFF

ANNAN TAKE ON LANGHOLM AT MILNTOWN
Annan make the short journey to Milntown on Saturday to take on Langholm in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Annan won by a single point in the last kick of the match in their encounter at Violetbank on 13th September. Since then Langholm have shown great home form being unbeaten at Milntown winning six out of nine games and are currently sitting in 4th place in the league. Annan, on the other hand, have won four games out of ten games and are currently sitting 3rd bottom in the league.
So with both teams with points to prove this could be an intriguing game on Saturday (weather permitting). The Annan selectors have been forced to make one change to the team selected to face East Kilbride with Graham Smith unavailable due to work commitments with Michael Carpenter filling the No 6 jersey.
Annan 1st XV Squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), R Gracie, J Nelson, G Hogg, M Carpenter, E Braid, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffin, J Bigham, K Jones. Replacements: A Gunning, D Barnes, A Halliday

ANNAN TRAVEL TO TORRANCE TO TAKE ON EAST KILBRIDE
After being beaten by East Kilbride a fortnight ago at Violetbank, in a re-arranged fixture from 6th September, Annan are in the mood to reverse the result on Saturday at Torrance in this Division 1 fixture in S.H.E. National Leagues. Despite last Saturday’s result Annan are still in 3rd bottom place in the league and a win on Saturday would at the very least move them up a place. The Annan selectors have gone with the same side that took the field against RHC.

THE 2NDS BEAT DUMFRIES....JUST

ANNAN’S FIRST EVER LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST DUMFRIES
Strange though it may seem this Saturday sees the first ever league fixture between Annan and Dumfries which makes this game a bit of a historic match for both clubs. Dumfries have had a great start to their first season in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues and are currently lying in 2nd place to Annan’s 6th place albeit Annan have two games in hand. Dumfries come off the back of a great win at RHC last Saturday whilst Annan suffered at the hands of Berwick at Scremerston the week before and there is no doubt that Annan will have a difficult task on their hands on Saturday at Park Farm. The Annan Selectors have gone with the team as selected for the Murrayfield Wanderer’s game with one positional change with Alex Halliday reverting to his wing spot and Michael Griffin to outside centre.
Annan 1st XV squad: C. Warrick, P. Carruthers (C), A. Gunning, J. Nelson, G. Smith, M. Carpenter, E. Braid, M. Scott, M Clark, N. Smith, A. Jancey, C. McCann, M. Griffin, A. Halliday, K. Jones Replacements: R. Gracie, B Blower, A Copland

ANNAN AT HOME TO MURRAYFIELD WANDERERS IN DIVISION 1
BOTH GAMES ARE POSTPONED
This Saturday sees Annan take on Murrayfield Wanderers in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues at Violetbank. Murrayfield Wanderers were relegated from Premier 3 last season and although having lost four of their six opening games this season so far they had a fine win last weekend away at RHC so another tough match is in prospect for Annan. Annan last played their visitors in November 1999 at Violetbank and in an extremely close game nicked a win in the dying minutes of the game when Gordon Carmichael slotted a penalty to take the final score to 17-14.
The Annan selectors have made only two changes from last week’s selection. As Bruce Blower is unavailable Michael Carpenter returns to the blind side flanker berth. The second is positional with Alex Halliday moving to the outside centre spot with Michael Griffin moving onto the wing.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO BERWICK
This Saturday Annan travel to take on Berwick at Scremerston in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Berwick were relegated from Premier 3 last season and although not having had their best start to the season with 2 wins out of 5 outings their defeats have been close run affairs and they will be formidable opposition for Annan on Saturday. Berwick are old friends of Annan who played each other in their Border Junior league days. Annan last played Berwick in Annan’s season in Premier 3 in 2003-04. In that ill fated campaign Annan were soundly beaten at Violetbank 52-0 although their visit to Scremerston was slightly less painfull losing 29-12.
Annan selectors have made a couple of changes to the team which played Cambuslang last Saturday with Michael Griffen, who was unavailable last week, restored to outside centre with Alex Halliday moving back to his wing spot. Wing forward Bruce Blower takes the blindside wing forward spot with Michael Carpenter unavailable.

THE 2ND LOSE TO WHITECRAIGS
Although well beaten in this Division 4 (West) fixture in the Scottish 2nd XV leagues Annan were much relieved to get their first game of the season under their belts.
The scoreline did little to reflect the effort put into the game by the Annan squad especially in the 2nd half of the game. Captain Liam Ogilvie was fulsome in his praise of his squad especially the 16 and 17 year olds who had turned out for their first senior game of rugby. For the record Annan’s points came from the boot of Adam Carlyle.
ANNAN HOST CAMBUSLANG
Annan 1st XV host Cambuslang at Violetbank and the visitors come to Annan seeking to improve on their slow start to the season. They have won only one of their opening four games – away to Edinburgh University. Annan, on the other hand, will be looking to keep the momentum going following their confidence booster at Preston Lodge last week. Centre Michael Griffin is unavailable, so Alex Halliday moves to centre and James Bigham makes his debut start on the wing. The bench is beefed up by the return of Ryan Gracie.

Annan travel to Prestonpans this Saturday to take on Preston Lodge in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Both teams won their home fixtures last season with Annan losing 31-6 away and winning 15-7 at home. Preston Lodge have not had the best of starts to their league campaign having lost all three of their opening games so far so they will be anxious to redeem themselves at home this Saturday. So a hard game is in prospect for the Annan squad. TRhe Annan selectors have made one change to the team as selected for the Langholm game with Kevin Jones at full back and Alex Halliday back on the wing.

ANNAN WELCOME LANGHOLM TO VIOLETBANK
Annan welcome local rivals Langholm to Violetbank this Saturday in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. The fixtures between these two clubs are always exciting action packed affairs and this one will no doubt be in the same mould. Last season the honours were even with each team winning their home games. The Annan selectors have made a couple of changes from the team selected for last weeks game with Alex Halliday in the full back slot in place of Kevin Jones who is unavailable and Andy Copland restored to the wing.

ANNAN WELCOME EAST KILBRIDE TO VIOLETBANK
BOTH GAMES ARE POSTPONED - PITCHES WATERLOGGED
Annan welcome East Kilbride to Violetbank this Saturday in Annans first home match of the season. The home side will be hoping to get back to winning ways after their opening defeat in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues at Barnton last Saturday.
Annan beat their visitors both home and away last season and will no doubt be hoping to repeat the performance again this season. East Kilbride however will have other ideas and always have a powerful set of forwards of whom Annan will have to be wary especially in set piece play.
Annans selectors have been forced to make some changes to last weeks team with winger Andy Copland unavailable and lock Graham Hogg injured in training. This has given youngster James Bigham his first start at senior level on the wing and with Graham Smith returning from honeymoon he has been given the 2nd row berth with Michael Carpenter selected at blind side wing forward.
Annan 1st XV Squad:
C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), R Gracie, J Nelson, G Smith, M Carpenter, E Braid, M Scott, M Clark, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffen, J Bigham, K Jones. Replacements: A Gunning, B Blower, C Bell

ANNAN START LEAGUE CAMPAIGN ON THE ROAD
Annan start their league campaign this Saturday with an away fixture against RHC (Royal High Corstorphine) at Barnton in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues. Annan will be hoping to build on their excellent third place in the league last season. This seasons Division 1 looks to be a much stronger league with Howe of Fife and Dumfries promoted from Division 2 joining the league with both teams on the up and from Premier 3 Murrayfield Wanderers and Berwick. Oddly enough the only team which Annan has never played on league business is local rivals Dumfries.
RHC will be a stern test for Annan based on last years performances although both teams won their away fixtures and lost their home ones RHC hold the balance having beaten Annan in the S.H.E Shield competition at Barnton. At the time of going to press the Annan selectors have not picked their team. The team will be selected after the trial match against Carlisle on Wednesday night. Players are advised to check this page/guestbook on Thursday night to check selection.
Players are to meet at Clubhouse at 11.30am for a 3.00pm K.O. Match Reps: D Barty and C McCann

VIOLETBANK SHIELD 15 ASIDE TOURNAMENT
This Saturday sees the eighth annual 15-aside tournament for the Violetbank Shield. This year the lineout is somewhat altered from the original lineout envisaged. Langholm and the holders Hawick YM have called off as both clubs have been invited to the Kelso Sevens tournament on Saturday. Stewartry have also called off. This has left tournament organiser James Mason with some reorganising to do. Ever equal to the challenge James has reorganised the set up with six teams with old friends from Kirby Steven Upper Eden and Penrith stepping into the breach.
The line up this year sees the hosts Annan welcome Dumfries who Annan will be playing in Division 1 of the National leagues following Dumfriess promotion last season, Newton Stewart who ended up 5th in Division 2 of the National leagues, Penrith who play in North Two East, Upper Eden who play in the North West Cumbria league and Netherhall who play in the Cumbria Division. So three teams from England and three from Scotland which should make an interesting mix of styles on show.
The gates open at 12 noon with admission £3 with under 18s free. There will be a beer tent and a barbecue.
The first tie is scheduled to kick off at 1.00pm
The Tournament is sponsored by TN Trawlers and Murray Bell
NEW SEASON CHALLENGES AWAIT ANNAN RUGBY
With the 2008-09 season almost here Annan RFC pre-season training is well underway. Coach Paul Buckley has been putting the senior players through their paces and is looking forward to the challenges that await in Division 1 of the S.H.E. National Leagues.
With Violetbank being unavailable throughout the summer due to remedial works to the pitches the wide expanses of the Everholm have been put to good use. Training numbers have been topped up by enthusiastic colts players, giving them an appreciation of senior rugby skills & fitness level. This experience will be invaluable to those colts who step up to senior rugby during the season as they follow in the boot marks of promising youth players of recent years.
The senior teams will focus on building on their 2007-08 performances, looking for improvements in all aspects of our preparations for each game to ensure we are as competitive and consistent as possible commented Paul.
Paul Buckleys comments were echoed by Club Captain Paul Carruthers who is leading the Club for his third consecutive season and is looking forward to leading his team again and is especially impressed by the enthusiasm displayed by the new crop of younger players swelling the training numbers.
Club President Don Barty is also looking forward to the new season. Let me start off by congratulating our friends at Galabank on their admission to the SFL and if we can get off to a flyer at the beginning of the season like they have, then everyone will be delighted. The players, coaches and supporters will be looking forward to the first league game on August 30th its a long, long close season and this season will bring new challenges. Last season, Annan RFC finished in its highest ever position, third in National Division One, so that is a clear benchmark and a tough one to follow old rivals Langholm and league newcomers Dumfries and Howe of Fife will be more than keen to make it tough for us.
Having lost Under 18 ace Alex Dunbar to Selkirk (and the SRU National Academy) and Steve Kelly through retiral, its going to be up to even more young guns to step up to the mark. Mark Clark has been in Valladolid in Spain on a strength and conditioning camp with Scotland Under 17s and the coaching staff have been impressed by the hard work put in by other young members of the squad. As a completely amateur Club, and one which relies almost exclusively on home-grown talent, we need to continue to grow the game at youth level and encourage as many youngsters as possible to get active at Secondary and Primary school level. We are, of course, extremely grateful to all our sponsors and are delighted that Magnox North have stepped on board as our major Club sponsor, for the 17th consecutive season. As Annan Rugby Club enters its 40th season, we look forward to seeing old and new friends at Violetbank the home of Annan Rugby
Annans league season kicks off on Saturday 30th August with an away trip to take on RHC (Royal High Corstorphine) in Edinburgh. Annans first home game at Violetbank is on September 6th September against East Kilbride. Season tickets at a cost of £20 will be available to buy from 17th August.
