The 1995-1996 season is over...........Annan are Champions once again....set a New British Rugby record for the highest scoring League game.........The get to the Semi-Finals of the Tennents 1556 Bowl.....beating the likes of Edinburgh Wanderers, Perthshire and Allan Glens on the way.......Annan get the first Scottish Rugby Homepage on the net......(unofficial of course.......).......and I've just realised that my glasses arn't scratched to hell....they just needed a VERY good clean.......I can SEE again.....I never knew ants looked so small........its just a shame Dumfries RFC got relegated......there is always something that spoils an almost perfect season....Now for season 1996-97.............Watch out for a revamped Homepage........this is Gus Robertson...last surviving member of the ship Annanereomous......signing off....for a wee while at least......
Annan are defeated in the Semi-final of the bowl, 27-3 by Selkirk......as a mark of respect there will now be a one page of silence....I ask you all to stand...
I SAID STAND!!!!!!!!
Annan are into the Semi-Finals of the Tennants 1556 Bowl. Beating Edinburgh Wanderers 22-7...A game that attracted a crowd of over 450, saw Annan dominate the entire game, and as the Scotsman wrote in Mondays paper..."and only the resolute defending of the away side kept the score respectible!!". 2 tries from Mark Hollis and Billy Henderson, 3 penalties from Gogs Carmichael and a drop goal from Sean MaGauchie seal the Victory!!..Annan now face Selkirk, a team 7 divisions above them!!!...more information when I get it!!!!!..
I lose access to my Computer source ie Napier University shuts down for Easter.....selfish or what!!!...hence the lack of updates.......But Im BACK!!!!....not that anybody actually reads this!!!!!!
Annan win their Bowl Match against Perthshire 67-19, scoring 11 tries in the process. Annan have been drawn against Edinburgh Wanderers, at home, it the Quarter Finals of the Bowl. Edinburgh are in the Premier League Division 4, 4 divisions above Annann. It should be a good pointer to how good Annan actually are.....I think their brilliant....but, then again, I am a tad biased....
After 6 years of doing the Annan match programme, Ian "Mystic Meg" Gilmour, had to hand over the Match programme duties for the Perthshire Bowl game to Don "Super Fart" Barty, (I will have an audio link in here soon....) This was due to "Mystic" having to go away to Germany to reseach into Von-Mystic-Grumpy of Dresden. Whether or not Ian gets the job back depends on how good and funny the Don programme was.....signs are not good as a laugh WAS heard, it was reported, from an Annan supporter at half-time......more news when in..
Annan play host to a touring Rugby Team from America, Severn River RFC. The game was played on Wednesday with an Annan XV winning 29 - 5.....more news when in.....
Annan win their League game against Waysiders 30-11.....which means Annan are promoted and will go up as Champions if they pick up one point from their last 2 games. If Annan do go up as Champions, it will be their 5th successive Championship year. Just think what Annan could do if I ever decide to get fit, get eye surgery, learn how to tackle, pass and kick the ball, Annan would be undefeatable!!!
Annan draw 2nd Division Perthshire in the 1st round of the SRU Tennents 1556 Bowl (for 3rd round 2nd placed teams from the 1556 Cup!!!). Annan get a home draw which is what they wanted as at home Annan have been undefeated for over 4 seasons.
Annan 1sts beat Clydebank 16-12. A game I wasn't present at luckily, as the Annan 1sts have only been beaten 5 times in two season and I've been to 6 first XV matches in 2 years.....and I was present at all 5 defeats!! Annan needed to win this game, as Clydebank were (and still are) their nearest challengers for promotion. Its looking "fairly good" for Annan the gain promotion. *PHEW*
Annan 1sts win their league game against Irvine 110-0, scoring 18 more tries in the process, and with McEwans paying 5 pounds per try, the 90 pounds the 1sts raised is also almost exactly the amount I need to keep the UK mirror of this page running for another year.....I'll be expecting the cheque soon!!!!! But I'll settle for a pint when I'm back down in Annan. Alcohol more important you see. Unless your under 18 and reading this, which means I'm legally bound to say, drink is evil and should be avoided.
Annan are beaten in the 3rd round of the 1556 Tennants Scottish Rugby Cup. I was through in Glasgow watching this match and all I can say is that the score did not reflect the game. I'm not saying Annan should have won....but the performance Annan put up made me proud to be an Annan supporter. At half time Annan were 38-0 points down...and a humping looked on the cards. There hadn't been much difference between the teams...but the GHK backs were a bit faster and were obviously more used to this level of rugby. GHK scored 6 tries in the first half....5 of which were either interceptions or after bad mistakes by Annan players. GHK were also more "streetwise" to the kind of referee that is used at this level. Handling in a ruck, lifting in the lineouts and backs always bordering on offside seem to be mainly ignored at this level. Annan were not used to this...and it took until the second half for the Annan players to become used to this type of refereeing. In the second half...the Annan players came out with all guns blazing..they scored 3 superb tries within 10 minutes of the restart....none converted....and looked to have scored a fourth..with an obvious penalty try (well obvious to us unbiased Annan supporters)...but is was not given...IT WAS A BLATENT PENALTY TRY MR REFEREE!!!!...We shall be sending a copy of our match tape!!! :O)...Annan competed brilliantly in the 2nd half, but the experience of the GHK team bore through and they scored 3 more tries. Final score GHK 59 Annan 15. All in all, Annan played great rugby but GHK were that bit quicker and thought faster on their feet than the Annan players. I can see GHK going far in this competition. Annan now go into the BOWL competition with all the other 16 second round losers. Other highlights of the GHK trip -
Glasgow District 24 Midlands 23. Victory for the Glasgow District, with Annan men, Neil Macgregor getting a try and Sean MaGauchie getting 2 conversions, the second of which won the game for Glasgow in the dying seconds. This kick will, in time, become the longest kick in rugby history.
5 Annan players are chosen for the Glasgow District XV to play the Midlands District XV on February 14th at East Kilbride. The players chosen were: A Graham, S MaGauchie, A Render, A Renwick and N Macgregor. Kick-off is at 7.00pm. Once again I am overlooked. When will they realise what they are missing out on - An unfit/blind person whose great at scoring tries against Jed-Thistle.
Annan have now gone 4 weeks without a game of rugby, with all games being called off because of the weather. With next week being an International weekend, Annan first game in 6 WEEKS, will be the cup game against GHK. Annan sent out two spies to GHK'S game against Wigtownshire on Saturday, with Ian "Mystic Meg" Gilmour and Alan "Oprah Winfrey" Robertson, donning their best Annan club tie and jumper (and probally the Annan bobble hat!!) and mingled, un-noticed, in the sparse crowd. The report?...the beer wasn't upto much.
As un-correctly forseen by our club soothsayer, Ian "Mystic Meg" Gilmour, we don't get an away draw against Hawick but we draw Glasgow High Kelvinside, away, in the 3rd round of the Scottish Tennants Rugby Cup. Stewartry, Wigtownshire and Langholm are also in the 3rd round. Dumfries RFC are not, after being thrashed in the 1st round.
Great news....Alan "Oprah Winfrey" Robertson, loses 5 pounds. 5 pounds in weight that is...not £5 cash...as he never gives ANY money to his poor deprived children...how do they manage.....
Annan President, Alan "Oprah Winfrey" Robertson enters the spirit of things by pretending to be his nickname and putting on 3 pounds!!. He had managed to lose weight for about 10 consecutive weeks until this drawback. More news on this sad day when known!!:o).
Annan 1sts thrash Falkirk 148-14 in their National League Division 4 game to create a new British Record. (Were gonna be in the Guiness book of Records!!!..woooooooooohh)
Annan RFC recieve a £113,000 grant from the UK Lottery Fund for Annan RFC's Violetbank project. They need over £320,000 to create the pitches and changing rooms, but with the money they got they hope to start on the pitches by Spring.
Fame at last. A 300 word or so article about this homepage appeared in John Beattie's Diary in the Herald. This fame and fortune was long overdue. I'm expecting an OBE and a Knighthood in the coming months!!!!
