ANNAN FINISH IN RELEGATION SPOT, BUT.....
Annan RFC’s President Don Barty had the following to say on the Club’s season:
“It’s been a hard fought league campaign, but ultimately we didn’t manage to do quite enough to pull ourselves out of the bottom two. Following a very good home win against Aberdeenshire , we had to rely on Allan Glens slipping up at the final hurdle. However, the Glasgow side gained a bonus point in losing 23-30 to promoted Kilmarnock last Saturday and moved above Annan on points differential. Our results since the turn of the year were very good on the whole and this is all credit to a great bunch of players and to coaches Neil Moffat and Niall Smith. The lads started to believe in themselves and played more as a team, showing a passion and determination to move away from the foot of the table. Ultimately, it was not to be despite some excellent late results. We simply left ourselves with too much to do after a poor start to the season where we had several opportunities to win matches - but were unable to close out games when we were in the lead in the last quarter.
It is probable that league restructuring will lead to regionalisation below National One and this will be decided at the AGM of the SRU on June 25th. If that does go through, then nothing much will change for Annan. It will simply be a matter of waiting to see whether we are placed in West 1 or East 1. On the other hand, if restructuring doesn’t go through, the dreaded trip to Orkney looms large!
Annan have lost a considerable number of players in the last three seasons and this fact cannot be understated. In a rural area such as ours, they are difficult to replace. We need to bring youth players through and often this takes time until they are ready for the big step up. It also needs dedicated 2nd XV players who are prepared to train hard and fight for 1st XV places. In an amateur game, we can hope for nothing more.
This season has ended disappointingly after everyone’s valiant efforts, but we will continue to try to play attractive rugby at whatever level we find ourselves. Training will start again next month and we take it from there.
Meantime, many congratulations from everyone at Annan RFC to Annan Athletic who have done the town proud by reaching the play offs – a great achievement.
THE 1STS WIN BUT COULD BE TOO LATE
The 1sts win their 5th out of the last 7 league games but alas it may all be to late to avoid relegation. Annan beat Aberdeenshire 18-10 but other results mean that Annan have to hope that Allan Glens don't pick up a point in their last 2 league games.

NEW YEAR, NEW START?
STOP PRESS: Game is off. Training at Violetbank at 11.30.
After an enforced weather induced seven week layoff Annan hope to kick start the remainder of their season with a visit to the Greenlaw on Saturday to take on local rivals Stewartry in Round 1 of the SRU Shield. Stewartry had to play a preliminary round in the Shield against Forrester RFC beating them 46 – 8 on 13th November.
On the question of Annan’s prospects for the New Year Club President Don Barty stated that "for a variety of reasons, our season has been a bit of a disappointment so far, but with more consistency and hard work there is no reason why we can't start picking up vital league points. The coaching staff are working hard and we look forward to the players responding to this. The arrival of brothers Benny and Josh Dennis from the Shoalhaven Club in Sydney should give the team a bit of a lift and lead to greater competition for places. Youth rugby is growing steadily and this is a great sign for the Club. We've been a long time without a game of rugby, so it would be great to start the New Year with a bang against old friends and rivals Stewartry this weekend"

Annan’s second XV eventually lost heavily in their Division 2 West of the Scottish Reserve leagues at Violetbank on Saturday. Annan put in a solid first half performance scoring two tries both credited to Graeme (Forrest) Smith to go into the break 10-12 down.
In the second half Annan’s fitness or rather lack of it let them down as their visitors got the upper hand in most facets of the game scoring a further 5 tries. This is going to be a hard season for the seconds unless they put in the work and commitment required to compete at this level.

This is "Rugby Ready" Course and is being provided on Monday 20th September at 6pm Violetbank 2hrs duration.
All those who are coaches and those who assist/supervise/pop-by should attend as it enables access to the Level 1 coaches course to those that want to progress but also gives everyone the grounding on how to deliver effective training sessions as well as the basics to the game. The more the better as SRU record the stats of how many trained coaches the Club has.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO COATBRIDGE TO OPEN LEAGUE CAMPAIGN
There is an air of eager anticipation in the Annan camp ahead of Saturday’s league opener against Waysiders Drumpellier in Division 2 of the SRU National Leagues after an encouraging series of pre-season encounters.
Coach Neil Moffat commented on the coaching team’s hopes for the coming season
‘We are excited about the forthcoming season since starting pre-season training in mid July. The squad as a whole have worked extremely hard on their fitness and skills to try and ensure a strong start in National Division 2. All the squad’s efforts have produced a good start by winning the first two pre-season warm up matches. In addition we had an encouraging performance in our own tournament which hopefully will act as a spring board into the opening game of the season on the 28th of August in Coatbridge. We have inherited a very talented and committed bunch of players who are eager to gain promotion back to National 1 this season. With a lot of hard work and a bit of luck we can do it’
Annan RFC President Don Barty also feels optimistic for the coming season
‘Obviously, there was a sense of disappointment at being relegated from National Division One at the end of last season but there are always going to be ups and downs at a Club from a rural area such as ours. We lose players who go off to University and to bigger Clubs in the Premiership – that’s all part and parcel of the game at our level, and we have to expect to keep bringing through young players.
This season, we will have a very young team but I am confident that they can hold their own in National Two. We are lacking in bulk in the forwards and, like many other Clubs, have a shortage of props. What we do have in abundance, though, is tremendous team spirit and if our backs get plenty of ball, they are capable of scoring tries. We have two new, young coaches at the helm in ex-players Neil Moffat and Niall Smith. It’s a steep learning curve for them and already they have gained the full respect and backing of the players and there’s one thing for sure – this team will try to play expansive rugby with a smile on their face!
One thing I am hoping for also is a stable 2nd XV, with more players pushing for 1st XV places. We have plenty of players at our disposal, but with that extra commitment we need to be able to have more players available on a regular basis, particularly for away games.
The Youth section is vitally important and we expect growth again in that department in the coming season.
Everyone at Annan RFC is looking forward to the season and if we can get off to a flyer like our friends up at Annan Athletic, it will give the local area a buzz. However, we have to be realistic. We are a small, amateur Club. If we lose players, for whatever reason, there is no easy fix. We go into the first league game at Waysiders/Drumpellier without the injured Michael Griffin and Mark Clark and the unavailable Scott McCann and Bruce Blower. Added to this, we have to fill the void left by Graham Smith’s enforced early retiral from the game due to injury.
Two players new to the Club are Robert Craig from Kilmarnock and, for the next five weeks, Sam Roberts from the Shoalhaven Club in Sydney, Australia. We also hope to have a further two players from Shoalhaven with us from November onwards.
It’s going to be a tough season, especially with long journeys to Aberdeen, Inverness and Thurso, but the players are up for it and they will give it their best shot. Everyone at the Club will do their utmost to put Annan and District on the map during the coming season and, if you make your way up to Violetbank, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by the local, young talent on view.'
Annan’s league opener against Waysiders Drumpellier from Coatbridge could be a tricky affair as the club’s have not met since 9th March 2003 when Annan beat them 18-3 in the quarter final of the BT Bowl Competition at Violetbank. Waysiders finished mid table in Division 2 last season and usually have a strong set of forwards to contend with.

ANNAN CONTINUE THE GOOD START
Annan travelled to Sycamore Lane Carlisle last Saturday to take on old friends Creighton in a trial match. Both teams were a few players short of their full squads and with the hosts short of players with front row experience the match was played with uncontested scrums. Annan were dominant in most facets of the game with the visiting backs in particular looking sharp. Annan’s scores came from winger Alex Halliday (2), hooker Callum Bell (2), wing forward Sam Roberts, winger Andrew Jancey, full back Euan Currie, stand off Craig McCann and centre James Bigham. Craig McCann added 7 conversions.
1STS START WITH A WIN/CREIGHTON/VIOLETBANK TOURNAMENT
With the new rugby season just a couple of weeks away Annan’s coaches have been putting the Annan squad for the 2010-11 season through their paces for the last couple of months with training starting in the middle of June. Last weekend an Annan RFC squad took on Division 1 (East) club Dunbar in a pre-season friendly at Hallhill under lights and came away with a four try to one victory.
This weekend the pre-season build up continues with a visit to old friends Creighton RFC from Carlisle at Sycamore Lane. The session will be in the form of four 20 minute sessions with all of Annan’s senior players getting a run out and should kick off at 2.30pm.
The squad will be announced at training on Thursday night along with meeting times and travel arrangements.
On the Saturday 21st August Annan host their annual Super 15 aside Tournament for 'The Violetbank Trophy" featuring 8 teams from Acton Nomads, Cambuslang, Dumfries, Penrith, Stewartry, Upper Eden, Wigton and hosts Annan.
