ANNAN WELCOME ALLAN GLENS TO VIOLETBANK IN FINAL LEAGUE GAME OF SEASON
Annan complete their league campaign on Saturday at Violetbank when they welcome Allan Glens from Bishopriggs in a rearranged fixture. This fixture was originally scheduled for 13th January but had to be postponed due to Violetbank being waterlogged. Annan won the away game at the end of September 27 – 5 and will be looking to end their successful league campaign on a high. The selectors have made some minor changes to the team who played against Caithness last Saturday with the return to full back of Kevin Jones, who was unavailable due to work commitments, with Jonny Callaghan reverting back to his wing position. With Graham Smith injured (knee) last weekend flanker Mike Scott moves to the No 8 slot with Bruce Blower in at blindside flanker and Neil Moffat, who was also unavailable last weekend, back at open side. This weekends fixture sees the end of an era for one Annan stalwart as Billy Henderson plays his last 1st XV game for the Club after a playing career, at Colts and senior level, which has spanned the best part of 20 years. The club are hoping that there will be a large turnout on Saturday for the last 1st XV game of the season.

THE 1STS ARE PROMOTED
Annan left it late into injury time to score the bonus point try which raised the roof (if it had one) at Violetbank to give them the vital extra point which means First Division rugby returns to Violetbank next season. Although the visitors from the north scored first with a penalty and in general gave the home side a hard time over the full eighty minutes. Annan firstly levelled the score from a penalty slotted by Craig McCann and then eased ahead with a try by full back Kevin Jones, a further penalty by Craig McCann and a try by standoff Niall Smith to take the half time score to Annan 16 Caithness 6.
In the second half lock Billy Henderson scored a try converted by Craig McCann and in the final seconds of the game in a tremendous surge towards the line it was centre Michael Griffen who crashed over to score the vital try. Then the celebrations began.

THE 2NDS BEAT IRVINE
After last weeks mauling at Lochshore few would have anticipated the fightback which Annan’s second string put in on Saturday at Violetbank against Irvine who are currently sitting in second place in the league. With the score at 3 all and the game the its final minutes stand off Conor Trant was the hero of the hour when he scored a fine try which he duly converted. With the penalty also to his credit Connor scored all of Annan’s points. A fine win which if Annan can continue to play at this level in their remaining games should see them consolidate their position in the top half of the table.
ANNAN WELCOME CAITHNESS TO VIOLETBANK FOR THEIR FIRST VISIT
This Saturday sees Annan welcome the club situated from the most northerly point on the Scottish mainland to Violetbank. This is the first meeting between Annan and Caithness at any level although Annan should have made the long trip north at the beginning of November but the match was postponed due to a flooded pitch. This match is re-scheduled to take place on the 21st April but is dependant on Annan’s progress in the Shield competition.
Caithness’s form appears to be better at home than away and Annan who need 5 points from their remaining three games to gain promotion will be hoping that they can take a step closer to their goal on Saturday. The Annan selectors have chosen the same team as last Saturday.
Annan 1st XV squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (C), S Kelly, B Henderson, J Nelson, M Scott, N Moffat, G Smith, K Hogg, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, M Griffin, J Callaghan, K Jones Replacements: G Hogg, B Blower, A Halliday

ANNAN WELCOME LINLITHGOW ON THEIR FIRST VISIT TO VIOLETBANK
Annan Rugby Club are now only nine points away from promotion to National League Division 1 and are looking for supporters to turn out in force for the remaining games of the season at Violetbank. Annan have only lost three matches out of eighteen in this year’s campaign and are now ready for the final push. Club President Don Barty was full of praise for the squad “We haven’t spoken much about promotion, which tends to put pressure on the players. However, we are now in a position where we need nine points from our remaining four fixtures to head back to Division One. It was a blow being relegated last season, but the players and coaches have responded magnificently and have produced some of the best rugby ever seen in Annan. We started the season with a bang and have kept the momentum going”
Don was also in no doubt that last week’s victory away to Premier 3 Ellon in the SRU Shield competition has provided the platform to a successful conclusion to the season. “To travel to the far north of Scotland and beat opposition from two leagues above us was a tremendous achievement. We were looking for a hard game to prepare us for our important match against Linlithgow this week. We certainly got that and the lads performed out of their skins.”
Annan could clinch promotion with good wins against Linlithgow and Caithness, both at home, this Saturday and next. A measure of the success of the young players introduced this season is that they are still without Andrew White and Alex Dunbar who are in Scotland’s Under 18 and Under 17 squads respectively.

ALEX DUNBAR AND ANDREW WHITE IN SCOTLAND SQUAD
A double celebration was in order for Annan Rugby Club this week when two of the local Club's star young players learned that they were in line for international honours. Stand-off Andrew White has been selected for the Scotland Under-18 squad while outside centre Alex Dunbar has been chosen in the Scotland Under-17 squad.
Both players impressed selectors when they turned out for Glasgow District in the recent round of matches against Edinburgh, Borders and Caledonia. Their success has delighted everyone at the Violetbank Club, and Annan RFC President Don Barty was full of praise for the international pair.
"Andrew and Alex are a credit to their families and to the Club. They both possess tremendous talent and we are extremely proud of them. If they both work hard at their game, who knows how far they can go? The pair of them have been regular Annan 1st XV players this season and that alone has been a tremendous achievement. Now, they both have the ability to go a lot further and we wish them every success."

Annan have agreed with Stewartry to play their postponed match from 18th November this Saturday at Violetbank with a 12 noon K.O. The game against Stewartry has an added edge to it in that the teams will also be playing for the Peter Chisholm Memorial Cup. ANNAN U16’S 29 STEWARTRY U16’S 0
With the wet pitch making play difficult and the going heavy and with Stewartry putting in one their usual tenacious performance Annan were made to work hard for their victory on Sunday. For a team that has not played a competitive match for almost 6 weeks the team play was excellent with all players combining well to put in a polished performance.
Annan’s first try was scored by Scott Nicholson with the second and third being scored by Craig Coupland with James Bingham converting one. Annan’s fourth was scored by Callum Nicholson, converted by James Bingham, and the final score completed Craig Coupland’s hat trick.
Final score Annan 29 Stewartry 0.

ANNAN BACK ON LEAGUE BUSINESS
After the festive break Annan are back on league business this Saturday when they travel to Beith to take on Garnock. Garnock are the only team to beat Annan in the Division 2 of the SRU National Leagues this season and to rub salt into the wound they beat them at Violetbank 27-0.
Annan are therefore anxious to redress the balance and beat Garnock at their own patch on Saturday. Garnock are in 3rd place in the league with Annan in 2nd place. The points difference is only 5 points although Garnock have lost 3 games and Annan only one. The difference is that Garnock have 9 bonus points to Annan’s 5 so it is all to play for on Saturday if Annan are to maintain their 2nd place in the league.

1STS BEAT HIGHLAND
The 1sts get a hard earned win over Highland in a game played at Annan Academy. Annan led 13-0 at half-time and despite Highland kicking 2 penalties, Annan held on to win 16-6. Annan actually scored 4 tries but 3 were chalked off for various 'offences' that were seen by the referee. Alas there will be no video highlights of this game - so we will never know. With the weather predicted for the week and the weekend all Annan supporters are urged to check with the clubhouse or this page to confirm whether the match is on or off and to its location – if Violetbank is unplayable Annan are trying to obtain permission to play on Annan Academy’s pitch.

This Saturday Annan have a break from league rugby when they play Strathclyde Police (The Men in Black) at Violetbank in the 3rd Round of the SRU National Cup. Annan have not played their visitors since their Glasgow District league days in the early 90’s. The Police team are always a bit of an unknown quantity as their team does seem to change dependent on availability of players. However Annan are under no illusion that this fixture will be anything other than a hard fought battle and have selected virtually the same team who played against Duns last Saturday.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO DUNS IN THE LEAGUE
After three weeks of inaction due to weather and Autumn Internationals Annan are keen to get back to playing rugby and travel to Hardens Field on Saturday to take on bottom placed Duns in Division 2 of the SRU National Leagues. Duns have yet to win a game this season in the league, so this match is a potential banana skin for Annan. Hardens Field has not been the happiest of hunting grounds over the last few seasons with Annan never having recorded a win there on league business. Annan will be out to change that on Saturday as they want to keep up the pressure on league leaders Falkirk.
Annan 1st XV Squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (Capt), S Kelly, G Hogg, B Blower, M Scott, N Moffat, G Smith, K Hogg, N Smith, A Jancey, C McCann, A Dunbar, M Griffen, G Lynch Replacements: J Crombie, J Nelson, J Callaghan

The U16's game against Isle of Arran is off as Violetbank is unplayable.
ONLY THE U16'S HAVE A GAME
This weekend neither of Annan’s senior teams have fixtures due to the Scotland v Australia match at Murrayfield.
Annan U16s welcome Arran U16s to Violetbank this weekend in what should be a testing game. Arran have requested the game be played on Saturday to alleviate the travel difficulties with Calmac ferries, whom, apparently run a restricted timetable on Sundays. Eager to assist, Annan RFC have obliged in their request. Kick off will be at 2pm, however, all players must contact coaches as there is a possibility of postponement due to severe weather conditions, which may also affect Arran's travel plans.
Team from; S Nicholson, S Woodhouse, C Bell, D Wilkinson, R Hollis, D Brooke, W Gray, M Panczak, C Nicholson, M Anderson, C Armstrong, M Clark, C Jamieson, J Bigham, C Henderson, C McEwan, J Butler, E McDougal, C Coupland,R Eggleton, J Harrison, G Johnstone, A Carlyle, R McKenzie, N E Others.

ANNAN HOST STEWARTRY IN LEAGUE AND CUP
This Saturday sees Annan welcome local rivals Stewartry to Violetbank in a unique double header. Not only will this encounter be a league match but it will also be for the Chisholm Cup played for annually between the two clubs. The Cup is in memory of Peter Chisholm who was President of the club between 1976 and 1983. This year the cup will be presented to the winning captain by Peter’s son Jimmy Chisholm.
The matches between the two clubs are always hard fought affairs and while Stewartry have never beaten Annan in the league they are the current holders of the cup so an exciting game is in prospect. The Annan team remains unchanged from the Accies game with A Halliday and J Nelson rewarded for their 2nd XV performances last Saturday with promotion to the bench.

ANNAN MAKE THEIR LONGEST EVER JOURNEY IN LEAGUE RUGBY
This weekend Annan’s 1st XV undertake their longest journey yet, in league rugby, with a trip to Thurso to take on Caithness in Division 2 of the SRU National Leagues. Caithness are one of the three teams promoted from Division 3 last season (the other two being Falkirk and Highland). Annan have never played Caithness at any level before and as such are an unknown quantity. They have a formidable home record with only one home defeat so far this season to their ‘local’ rivals Highland. Their away record is not quite so impressive with only one win on the road and they are currently lying seventh in the league.
The Annan selectors have made one change to the team which beat Linlithgow last Saturday with Gavin Lynch taken over the wing spot from Alex Halliday who is on the bench.
Annan 1st XV Squad: C Warrick, P Carruthers (Capt), S Kelly, B Blower, B Henderson, M Scott, N Moffat, G Smith, A Jancey, A White, G Lynch, C McCann, A Dunbar, M Griffin, N Smith. Replacements: J Crombie, G Hogg, A Halliday

ANNAN TRAVEL TO LINLITHGOW
This Saturday Annan travel to Linlithgow and will want to keep their unbeaten away record intact. This will not be an easy task as Linlithgow are a formidable side, especially at home. They presently lie in 4th place some 7 points behind Annan. Their best win to date this season being an away win at Garnock. Annan will require to get their feet back on the ground after last weeks fine win against the league leaders.

ANNAN TOPPLE FALKIRK
In an action packed game, Annan gave Falkirk a doing and ran out 29-14 winners.
It all looked bleak after the first half - with Annan down 9-0 and it could of been worse - but Falkirk decided to kick to touch 3 very kickable penalties - something that came back to haunt them....
The 2nd half was all Annan and 3 cracking tries meant it was a great victory for the 1sts.
The Annan points came from: Craig McCann (4P,1C), Alex Dunbar (1T), Alex Halliday (1T) and Billy Henderson (1T).
Get in ...looks like Annan gets the win bonus this time....

TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH AT VIOLETBANK
This Saturday sees a table topping clash when 2nd placed Annan host the unbeaten league leaders Falkirk at Violetbank. Falkirk won Division 5 Caledonia in 2004, then Division 4 in 2005, and Division 3 last season, losing only three games in that time. Currently they are unbeaten atop Division 2. Annan last played Falkirk in Division 4 in season 1995-6. Players to watch are former Stirling County players Kevin McKenzie (13 caps plus Scotland A and B) and stand off Mark McKenzie (ex Bourgoin-Jallieu, Glasgow Caledonians and Bourg-en-Bresse). This has all the ingredients to be a cracker of a game.
Annan have stand off Andrew White back this week after he failed a late fitness test for last weeks game at Kilmarnock and also back is Niall Smith who was injured in the Annan v Garnock game. Niall is selected to play at full back with Craig McCann moving to inside centre. Also getting his first start since injury is Bruce Blower who have featured from the bench in the last two games.

This Saturday Annan travel to Bellsland to take on old adversaries Kilmarnock in Division 2 of the SRU National Leagues. Annan and Kilmarnock have had some fine battles over the seasons. Kilmarnock this season have had a poor start and are still without a win in the league. Although Annan will have to be very wary as in each game since the commencement of the league season Killie look to have improved with each game giving league leaders Falkirk a torrid time a couple of weeks ago.

ANNAN WELCOME HOWE OF FIFE TO VIOLETBANK
Annan welcome Howe of Fife from Cupar to Violetbank on Saturday in their latest Division 2 fixture in the SRU National Leagues. Annan will be hoping to erase the memory of their last home game against Garnock and maintain their position at the top end of the table. Annan and Howe of Fife have played four times before on league business with Annan winning three of the four encounters. Howe are sitting mid table and had a fine win last week against Linlithgow and will be a tough nut to crack for the home side.

Scrum half Craig McCann is moved to stand off with winger Andrew Jancey moving to the No 9 berth. Gavin Lynch moves from fullback to cover the wing spot with Joe Crowther fills the full back role.

1STS AND 2NDS BOTH ENTERTAIN GARNOCK
Annan have a double header against Garnock at Violetbank with a three o'clock kick off. Garnock will provide stiff opposition for both the 1st XV and 2nd XV, but with Annan 1st XV having won their first four matches, three of them away from home, and the 2nds having won their first fixture at Lenzie last week, confidence will not be in shortage in the home ranks.Garnock have won two and lost two of their opening four games in National Division two, but are nevertheless a force to be reckoned with and could be up there in the mix come the end of the season. Garnock were pipped by one point for promotion last season.
Annan 1st XV have Niall Smith at stand off in place of Andrew White who is being rested, Graham Smith comes back in at No. 8 and Kevin Jones returns at full back, with Billy Henderson switching to second row and Michael Carpenter and Gavin Lynch occupying the bench. Annan's only injury doubt is scrum half Keith Hogg.

THE U16'S LOSE TO LANGHOLM 22-0
After the spirited preformance of the previous Sunday, an over-awed Annan team sat back and let Langholm take this game to a well deserved victory.
More effort is required on the training field to mend many of the bad habits which appear to be creeping in. To pose any great threat in this years league the players need to ask questions of their continued committment to produce success in match situations.
This friendly hopefully supplied that wake up call.
ANNAN TRAVEL TO INVERNESS TO TAKE ON HIGHLAND RFC
Annan take on their second longest journey of the season when they travel to Inverness to take on Highland RFC at Canal Park. THE UNDER 16'S START THE SEASON WITH A WIN
On a blistering hot afternoon against a heavier pack Annan chose to play a consistently penetrating game with support play at the highest level. Playing at each other’s shoulders Cumnock had to endure an endless wave of Annan play and when control was gained the ball was spread wide to allow the backs to cash in on tidy ball.
This was the opening game of the Glasgow & District U16 Leagues with 15 man rugby played at its best. The boys should be proud of this result and need not fear anyone on this form

ANNAN HOST DUNS IN THEIR FIRST HOME LEAGUE GAME AT VIOLETBANK
Annan, after two weeks on the road, at last have a home fixture on Saturday when they take on old Border rivals Duns at Violetbank. Duns were relegated along with Annan last season but are always a difficult side to play. Honours over the years have gone with home advantage and the Annan coaches will be hoping that they can consolidate the team’s great start to the season with a home win on Saturday. Duns have not had the best start to their season with two home defeats to Falkirk and Linlithgow and will obviously be looking to make amends for those defeats. Annan are without centres Niall Smith and Michael Griffen, prop Steve Kelly and lock Graham Hogg who are all unavailable. This has given Alex Dunbar his 1st XV start at centre alongside with Craig McCann who moves in from the wing with Alex Halliday also getting his first start on the wing. Another product of the youth sides Jonathon Crombie also gets his first start at prop.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO STEWARTRY IN THE LEAGUE
Annan are on their travels again this Saturday for their second league game against old rivals Stewartry at the Greenlaw. Stewartry are one of the few teams that Annan play every year irrespective of which league either team plays in with their annual fixture for the Chisholm Cup. Annan will be hoping to continue on their winning ways and hope that they will be well supported in this local derby.
Annan are still without flanker Bruce Blower who is still recovering from an ankle knock he sustained at the Violetbank Tournament. And the team remains unchanged from the last week’s selection with the exception of the two of the replacements which sees experienced campaigner prop James Gilmour on the bench along side young back Alex Dunbar who has earned his place in the 1st XV squad after his excellent displays for the 2nd XV.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO NEW ANNIESLAND TO TAKE ON GLASGOW ACCIES IN LEAGUE OPENER
Annan start their Division 2 League campaign on Saturday with an away fixture to Glasgow Accies at New Anniesland. Annan have never played Accies at 1st XV level before. Prior to the formation of Glasgow Hawks Glasgow Accies and GHK were clubs playing in the top flight and the reformation of the two clubs saw them start at the bottom and work their way up the leagues. Accies had, until stalling last season, been promoted for six successive seasons and last season ended up in mid table of Division 2.
They are however an unknown quantity and Annan will have to be top form to get a result away from home. The only squad member from last Saturday’s Violetbank Shield is wing forward Bruce Blower who has not recovered from an ankle injury received in the final.

VIOLETBANK 15 ASIDE CHALLENGE
The annual Violetbank 15-a-side challenge took place last Saturday and provided a feast of entertainment for all present and an opportunity for the participating teams to gauge progress made in summer training before the league campaigns begin this week.
Unfortunately, Livingston pulled out at the 11th hour so the game times were lengthened in their league. The Tournament results were:
League A
Netherhall 0 Annan 14
League B
Dumfries 0 Langholm 16
MOFFAT 10'S
After despatching Islay and Newton Stewart, Annan lost narrowly 26 – 14 to Boroughmuir in the final. I say narrowly because 7 Boroughmuir points came in the last play of the game. Scott McCann and Conor Trant scored the tries and Conor two conversions. Annan played well all afternoon and the final could have gone either way it was so close. The Annan players gave everything and played the final with 3 sixteen year olds and a seventeen year old in the team. Veteran scum half Barry Graham was outstanding and won player of the tournament. His commitment and attitude is an example the coaches are looking for. Hooker Stewart Wylie has impressed so far in the pre-season and run himself into the ground. With the league fixtures fast approaching this was a good day with the rest of the squad at the Violetbank tournament. Euan Braid’s parents watched the games and must have been bursting with pride at their sons’ performance. The lad was immense. Mr. & Mrs. Dunbar, Trant and Gracie would have been just as proud.
STEWARTRY SEVENS

Annan Rugby Club held their Annual General Meeting in their clubrooms at 17 Bank Street on Friday night.
President Don Barty reported that whilst it had been a disappointing season for the 1st XV, who were relegated to National Division 2 for season 2006/07, the 2nd XV had been promoted to Division 4 (West) of the Scottish 2nd XV leagues and the youth teams all had had successful seasons.
Andrew White and Bruce Blower had brought great honour to the club in being selected to play for Scotland’s U17 team and Alex Dunbar, Euan Braid, Mark Clark and Ryan Gracie had been selected as part of the Glasgow U16 squad who are currently taking part in a three week training and coaching course at Limerick University Sports.
Club Treasurer Lindsay Currie reported that whilst the club’s finances were in a much healthier state than last season several hard decisions had had to be made during the year in order to achieve this result and several more hard decisions would be needed during the coming season to ensure continuing financial stability within the club.
The Club officials elected for the coming season were:
