END OF SEASON NEWS

ANNAN AT THE LANGHOLM SEVENS

Although this was Annan RFC’s first visit to the Langholm 7’s and despite losing in the first round to Melrose the Annan 7 almost pulled off the shock of the tournament. Not only did they score first against the tournament favourites but were leading 12-7 at half time through two tries by winger Kevin Jones and a Niall Smith conversion. In the second half, despite possibly having the bulk of possession, the tightened up Melrose defences were able to contain the Annan attacks and from some offensive defence Melrose were able to capitalise on spilt ball to retake the lead which they never relinquished to win the tie 24 – 12.

All in all this was a fine sevens performance by the young Annan 7 at their first senior sevens tournament who at no time were overawed by their more illustrious opponents who went on to win the Langholm tournament.

ANNAN RFC SENIOR AWARDS FOR SEASON 2001/2002

Annan RFC’s Club Player of the Year Award was awarded to Club Vice Captain Andy Renwick. Andy also won the Player’s Player of the Year Award, which was voted on by the Club players at the Annual Dinner Dance held on 26th April. Neil Moffat was awarded the Trophy for the Most Improved Player and Petrina Sidebottom was awarded the Ladies Player of the Year Award.

ANNAN COLTS AND UNDER 16 AWARDS NIGHT FOR SEASON 2001/2002

Annan RFC’s Colts and U16s Awards Night took place in the Clubrooms on Friday 3rd May with Colts Coach Ian Black on the hard but rewarding season undertaken by the Colts squad with Kenny White appraising the Youth Section’s season.

The Club awards were made as follows:

Youth Player of The Year – Michael Griffen
Most Valuable Player – Craig Moffat
Most Influential Player – Andrew Eggleton
Most Improved Player – John Nelson
Colts Player of the Year – Stewart Livingstone

Three players were also awarded their playing jerseys in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the season. They were:

Alan Rae (No 13); Craig McCann (No 10) and Michael Carpenter (No 8).

COLTS & UNDER 16 PRE-SEASON TRAINING

Would all Colts and Under 16 players please note that training & preparation for season 2002/2003 will commence on Wednesday 5th June at Violetbank (7.00pm start) – both boots and training shoes will be required.

With a very young U18 team this coming season and a very inexperienced U16 side all of the Youth coaches feel that longer preparation is required in order for the teams to fulfil their potential for the coming season.

Coaches Kenny White, Ian Black and Michael Tully would also like to pass on their best wishes to the lads who will be moving on to senior rugby next season. They also ask that all players hand in all DMS tracksuits and training shirts into the Clubhouse in a plastic bag with a note of their name marked for the attention of Ian Black.

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
FOR SATURDAY/SUNDAY 20th/21st APRIL

On Sunday Annan play host to Gordonians RFC from Aberdeen in their last league match of the season. This match was due to be played 15th February but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. With Gordonians already relegated and Annan safe from relegation one could be forgiven in thinking that this could be a meaningless match. In the terms of league positions it probably is but Gordonians will be wanting to go down with a bang and Annan very much want to show their supporters what they are capable off after an encouraging later half of the season.

The Annan squad shows one or two changes from the one, which was so narrowly defeated by Preston Lodge last weekend. Neil Moffat fills the prop spot instead of his more familiar hooker role; Billy Henderson is back at lock, hopefully recovered from his hand injury, with Stuart Clanachan reverting to his wing forward spot and Colt Alan Rae replacing fellow Colt Andrew Eggleton, who is unavailable, on the wing.

Annan 1st XV squad: 1. C. Warrick 2. P. Carruthers 3. N. Moffat 4. G. Smith 5. W. Henderson 6. S. Clanachan, 7. R. Currie 8. A. Renwick 9. B. Graham 10. N. Smith 11. A. Rae 12. A. Render 13. S. Williamson 14. K. Jones 15. K. Hogg Replacements: J. Tinning, S. Livingston, C. McCann, E. Hay

On Saturday Annan have been invited to send a 7 to the Selkirk Junior 7’s.

Annan 7 squad: S. Clanachan, R. Currie, P. Minto, K. Hogg, N. Smith, A. Eggleton, K. Jones, A. Render, N. Moffat, P.O’Donnell

Annan Tigers are at home to Moffat at Violetbank on Sunday.

Annan U13s & U14s have training at Violetbank on Sunday

Annan U16s have a match against Dumfries at Park Farm on Sunday.

The 2nds game was postponded when Strathendrick could not raise a front row, however.....

With Strathendrick unable to fulfil their league commitments when they were unable to find props for the re-arranged fixture Annan’s 2nd string managed to secure a place at Dumfries RFC’s 7s tournament. Although it initially looked like there would not be space for an additional team the non appearance of Selkirk allowed Annan the chance to participate fully. Unfortunately this meant an immediate start against Hawick YM.

The absence of a warm up was apparent in the opening stages of the tie with a number of tries being easily scored by the Hawick side. However, after the break Annan started to improve somewhat and stemmed the tide of the Hawick attack.

As the tournament was a round robin event, Annan had a chance to warm up properly and to run through some drills in preparation for their next tie against a young Newton Stewart side. The Annan side performed considerably better in this tie with Euan Hay scoring 6 tries and other tries coming from Alistair Graham and Gary Coupland.

Moffat provided the next opposition in a closely fought third tie with the opening try coming from the Moffat side. Although tougher opposition than in the previous tie Annan came through as eventual winners with an ever-improving performance.

With tiredness now setting in Annan faced a Dumfries Colts 7 in the final round robin tie of the day and managed to pull away from a committed opposition to win the final tie to secure second place in the group behind the eventual tournament winners Hawick YM.

All in all the Annan squad performed well and enjoyed the tiring afternoon at sevens with all involved agreeing that watching televised sevens was a more sensible idea. Full details of scorers can be obtained from those who succeeded in crossing the line although Bruce Hay may not wish to be reminded that a touchdown over the 22 does not count!

Annan Squad: G. Coupland, I Thorburn, S. Wylie, D. Wylie, K. Hogg, C. Johnstone, A. Little, B. Hay, E. Hay, P. Bertram, A. Graham

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
SATURDAY 6th APRIL

Annan’s first foray of the season into sevens proved relatively successful with the Annan seven reaching the semi finals of the Langholm Junior 7’s at Milntown. Annan’s first game was again Gala YM who on past sevens form have always proved a formidable sevens outfit. Annan dispatched them 28 – 7 with an excellent display of the truncated game. In the second round Annan again played with some authority beating Earlston 48 – 0. In the first semi final Annan came up against a fluent Hawick seven who eventually ran out winners by 25 – 10. All in all an enjoyable outing for the club. The Annan points scorers were Kevin Jones (3 tries), Andrew Eggleton (3 tries) Keith Hogg (3 tries), Niall Smith (2 tries and 8 conversions) with Bob Currie, Billy Henderson and Graham Smith adding a try apiece.

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
SATURDAY 30th MARCH

The Annan 1st XV go down 32-10 to Ross High. Annan were leading at half-time but 2 quick Ross High tries killed the game off. The Annan points came from a Clanny try and 5 points from Baz. Ross High look certain for promotion now to Premier 3 but I don't think it will be long before we play them again........

With several 2nd XV regulars unavailable over the holiday weekend Annan’s second string had to rely on several veterans to turn out to make up the numbers and whilst they more than held their own in the set piece play they were no match for the pace of the home backs. Annan’s points were scored by veteran flanker Neil Halliday, who scored one of his typical rampaging tries and a further two tries by centre Euan Hay who also converted both his tries.

After this fine win over local rivals Dumfries Annan will now play Stewartry in the last fifteen aside game of the season (date to be decided) to decide who are the champions of Dumfries and Galloway with both clubs having defeated Dumfries and Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart.

Annan fielded eight under 16 players who will be eligible to play for next years colts side and the pick of the players on display would have to be stand off Graeme Gemmel who looks a great prospect for next season. Full back Scott McCann also had another fine game taking over the kicking duties from his brother who was ill and unable to play. John Nelson opened the scoring for the visitors after a fine run. Tries from Liam Ogilvie (2), Darren Mann (2), Alan Rae and Michael Carpenter soon followed. Scott McCann added four conversions.

This was a comfortable win for the Annan boys in the end but Dumfries stuck in for the full eighty minutes with notable performances by Jonny Sloan who caught the eye and the excellent Stephen Dreyer. Alan Rae gave another 110% performance with young Michael Pattison and Chris Crichton working extremely hard.

Annan 2nd XV eventually arrived in Beith after a three and a half hour journey of discovery in darkest Ayrshire. Some of the geographically challenged members of the squad were extremely concerned when the bus travelled through Moscow on its way to Lochshore. The knock on result for the lost souls and their hosts was a kick off time of 3.40pm and the game drawing to a close in the gathering gloom.

As to the game itself, it seemed to lose its way as well as both teams battled their way to mediocrity. The only highlight being the wining score by standoff Craig Johnstone who crossed the try line to give Annan’s second string a vital win in Division 5 of the Scottish 2nd XV league.

For 40 minutes the Annan Ladies competed well against their visitors from Edinburgh in this Division 2 match in the SWRU leagues and in fact scored first through hooker Katie Lake who from a period of driving and rucking play drove over to score. Lismore fought back and levelled the score and then took the lead through a fine backs try. Just prior to half time a fine solo effort from centre Katie Robison levelled the scores at the break at 10 –10.

In the second half Lismore upper their play and ran in a further six tries, four of which were converted as Annan struggled to contain the lively visiting backs. Annan scored a conciliation try towards the end of the half when Gerri Robison followed up a loose ball to win the footrace to the line.

The Annan Colts beat Stewartry - Both teams took the opportunity to play next seasons Colts in this game and the Annan contingent did themselves proud. Annan never looked in any danger and played with great spirit and enthusiasm giving much pleasure to their coaches and supporters alike. The Annan try scorers were Darren Marr (2), Scott McCann and Ross Woodman with Scott McCann adding a conversion. Special mention this week goes to Alan Rae for his 100% effort at scrum half. All the youngsters did themselves proud. Ross Haggerty, John Lake, Michael Pattison (another fine display), Ross Woodman, Liam Ogilvy, Graeme Gemmel, Darren Marr (only his second game), Scott McCann and Michael Griffen all gave fine displays and made the age level step up with great credit.

This week sees the Colts take on Hillhead Jordanhill in the quarter final of the Glasgow Cup at Violetbank. A good support for the boys would be appreciated and if the game is as good as the first encounter this season it should prove to be a cracker

ANNAN TEAMS - LATEST NEWS
FOR SATURDAY/SUNDAY 16th/17th MARCH

Annan travel to Edinburgh on Saturday to take on Trinity Accies at Bangholm in Division 1 of the BT National Leagues. Annan must be hopeful of a victory in that Trinity have never beaten Annan in the League or Cup competitions. However the squad should not be under the illusion that this will an easy game as Trinity are much more difficult to beat at home these days. The Annan team shows no changes to the team, which beat Cambuslang last Saturday, at Violetbank.

Michael Carpenter, Keith Nelson, John Nelson, Stuart Livingstone, Craig McCann, and Andrew Eggleton will start the game with Craig Moffat, David Wyllie, Colin Rodger and Chris Crichton travelling as replacements. This is this teams first game together this year and hopefully will be followed by at least one fixture at Violetbank which would be well worth a visit. ANNAN TEAMS - LATEST NEWS
FOR SATURDAY/SUNDAY 9th/10th MARCH

After the improved performance at Corstorphine a fortnight ago Annan are hopeful of building on that performance for Saturday’s encounter when they take on Cambuslang in Division 1 of the BT National Leagues. Cambuslang beat Annan earlier in the season at Coats Park and the home side are eager to make amends for that defeat. The Annan squad show no changes from the side who were narrowly beaten a fortnight ago in this must win encounter at Violetbank.

Annan 1st XV Squad: Forwards from C. Warrick, N. Moffat, M. Forbes, D. Irving, W. Henderson, G. Smith, S. Clanachan, R. Currie, A. Renwick. Backs: B. Graham, N. Smith, A. Eggleton, S. Williamson, A. Render, K. Jones, K. Hogg Replacements: P. Carruthers, P. Minto,

Annan’s second-string travel to Fort Matilda on Saturday in Division 5 of the Scottish 2nd XV Leagues. This is their first outing for six weeks and will be a tough fixture for the ring rusty outfit.

Annan Ladies are hopeful of playing their 2nd Round cup game against Division 2 Champions Kirkcaldy at Violetbank on Sunday after previous postponements due to the weather. Annan are still without their influential half back pairing of Lyndsey Povall and Catriona Rae but a win would see them at home to Hillhead Jordanhill in Round 3 and a defeat will see them in the Plate Competition.

UNDER 15’s: are away to Wigtownshire on Sunday; depart the clubhouse at 10.15am.

UNDER 13/14’s: U13 and U14 club games are cancelled this weekend as all Annan Academy players in these age groups are involved in the Scottish Schools Silver Jubilee Tournament at Murrayfield on Sunday. ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
SATURDAY 2nd MARCH

Annan Colts at last managed to get their Round 2 Cup game against Greenock Wanderers Colts at Fort Matilda played last Saturday and game away with a win.

Annan at last got their Glasgow Cup tie at Greenock played and with their, albeit unconvincing, win are now through to the quarter finals. The game was never as close as the score suggests. Two Colin McCann penalties and a Keith Nelson try split the sides at the end of the day, but Annan were always in command against a greatly improved Greenock Wanderers side to the one beaten earlier in the season. Annan were buoyed up by the return to the side of Andrew Eggleton who had a superb first half but was starved of good possession and space in the second half.

Pick of the Annan side were John and Keith Nelson. The former working hard throughout the whole game and the latter the powerhouse of the side always looking dangerous in possession of the ball and whose skill and work rate continues to improve with each game.

The quarter final against Hillhead Jordanhill will be played at Violetbank on 23rd March and should be a date for the diary for all fans.

The Annan 1st XV played their first game since the 19th of January - however the lack of match practice proved too much as a ring rusty Annan went down 8-5 to 1st Division rivals Corstorphine. A match I thought would have been called off due to the blizzard up in Edinburgh on Friday night - so much so I didn't go to the game even though I'm only 25 minutes from Corstorphines ground - you have to love the Scottish weather!!!

ANNAN TEAMS - LATEST NEWS
FOR SATURDAY/SUNDAY 23rd/24th FEBRUARY

With several of the Annan 1st XV, along with some Colts getting some much needed match practice last Saturday against Langholm’s second string at Milntown Annan this week travel to Corstorphine to take on fourth placed Corstorphine at Union Park in Division 1 of the BT National Leagues.

Corstorphine took the honours earlier in the season at Violetbank by 20 points to 16 and have really found some form of late so will be quite a handful for their visitors. The Annan selectors have chosen the same team, which was beaten by Dunfermline in their last outing on 19th January.

All senior matches were off except a training game against Langholm which Annan won.

Annan’s U14 team had a productive match on Sunday however when they travelled to Glasgow to play Cartha Queens Park. Having gained control in the battle for forward supremacy Annan’s scrum half Ben Hawthorn and fly half Andrew Jancey were encouraged by the coaches to spin the ball wide. This they did and resulted in further tries from backs Callum Grant (1), Andrew Lax (2), Ben Hawthorn (2), and Euan Gemmell (1).

Cartha replied with a well-worked try of their own which the converted. Although well beaten the hosts never gave up. The kicking duties were shared between Ben Hawthorn (5 conversions) and Cameron Houlison (2 conversions). Final Score Cartha QP 4 Annan 39

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
SATURDAY/SUNDAY 19/20th JANUARY

The Annan 1st XV were beaten 27-0 by current league leaders Dunfermline. Annan had high hopes of getting something from this game but were 13-0 down after 5 minutes! Poor tackling by the Annan backs led to Dunfermlines 1st try. This converted try, coupled with 2 penalties meant Annan had a mountain to climb. A 2nd Dunfermline try was a well worked backs move. Half-time Dunfermline 20-0.

Annan started the 2nd half a bit more brightly but a very dubious 3rd converted try put Annan 27-0 down. Dubious in the sense that the Dunfermline 'try' scorer was tackled 3 feet short of the try line, a double movement and he was still short, so a triple movement gave him the try! All in all a very poor display by Annan against a very poor Dunfermline team who really only had one tactic which was to chip the ball over the Annan defence at ever stage of the game. They won though so its just sour grapes from me!!

I must thank though the Dunfermline linesman who made my day so much better by being a startling example of a man who knows his stuff. His witty put downs and banter made my day a bit more enjoyable. Cheers mate you really are a credit to your club. No you really are. No really.

Annan’s U16’s traveled to East Kilbride on Sunday in Round 2 of the Glasgow U16 Cup and in a rousing first half display scored 4 tries and a conversion to lead 22-7 at half time. The Annan scores came from Michael Griffen (2 tries), Duncan Fisher (try), Duncan Smith (try) and Tom Hodgson (conversion).

In the second half the home side fought back to take the full time score to 22 points all and the tie went into extra time with the first team to score declared the winner. Unfortunately for the plucky Annan side it was the home side who scored the vital try and Annan now must look forward to a run in the Shield Competition.

Annan Ladies won a closely fought game at Violetbank on Sunday in Division 2 of the SWRU leagues against third placed Strathmore. Despite losing the try count by 4 tries to 3 it was the kicking of scrum half Lindsey Povall, which won the day with a 100% record. Laura Brodie, Katie Robson and Catrona Rae scored the Annan tries

ANNAN TEAMS - LATEST NEWS
FOR SATURDAY 1st DECEMBER

Annan return to league duty this Saturday when they entertain Trinity Accies in Division 1 of the BT National Leagues at Violetbank. This is the final match of the first half of Annan's league season and with two league defeats in a row a win is vital for the clubs survival in this Division. The squad is without influential flanker Bob Currie and winger Michael Anderson who are both injured and with Stuart Clannachan doubtful after an injury at training the clubs resources are seriously stretched. With Bob Currie injured the back row has been re-jigged with Stuart Clanachan, if passed fit, taking over the No 6 berth in lieu of No 8 with Graham Smith taking over the No 8 position.

ANNAN TEAMS IN ACTION
SATURDAY 24th NOVEMBER

Well, this should say the Annan team in action as the only game to take place this weekend was the Annan 2nds v Dumfries 1sts. After falling behind to an early Dumfries try, Annan 2nds come good and run riot to win 55-14.

Brief Match Report - 2nd XV

The 1sts game against Wigton was cancelled when Wigton couldn't raise a team. Annan were going to call off anyway as most of the 1st team had tickets for the Scotland v New Zealand game. That Townsend is SUCH a good player. No he really is. No really.

The Annan 3rds managed to raise a team for the first time in 2 months - but Carlisle called off. Such is the cruel mistress that is 3rd XV rugby.

SATURDAY 27th OCTOBER

Annan 1sts are beaten by Corstorphine 20-16. Annan at least gain a bonus point for keeping it within 7 points - but I'm sure the Annan players won't be thinking about that. So Annan are beaten at home for the second time this season. Oh well only Premier 2 side East Kilbride next week in the Cup. The perfect pick-me-up. The Annan points came from Alan Rae (T) and Niall Smith (1C, 3P)

The Annan 2nds are beaten 58-5 by Linlithgow. The Annan points coming from a Bruce Hay try. The Annan Colts are hammered 43-0 by Ayr. All in all a bad day at the office for Annan

ANNAN TEAMS - LATEST NEWS
SATURDAY 29th SEPTEMBER

Saturday sees Annan welcome, for the first time on league business, last seasons Division 2 champions Dunfermline to Violetbank in this Division 1 encounter in the BT National Leagues. Annan have only played Dunfermline once before in last years BT Cellnet Trophy encounter at Violetbank with the visitors returning to Fife with the honours. Dunfermline are sitting second in the league after three games and are going to prove a difficult outfit to beat even with Annan having the home advantage.

The Annan team has a slightly different look about it this week with Captain Andy Render moving back to his old berth at hooker after two seasons at centre. This move has been occasioned by the injury to Paul Carruthers in last Saturdays game at Kilmarnock. With winger Kevin Jones moving into the vacant centre berth with Paul Minto taking the wing position. Flanker Bob Currie is back at openside flanker after injury but Niall Smith is still out of contention having been concussed in the Preston Lodge game with Craig Johnstone retaining the stand off berth.

Annan’s second string have a difficult fixture to their first home match in their leaguecampaign in Division 5 of the Glasgow Sports Agency Inter City 2nd XV leagues when they entertain league new comers Jedforest at Violetbank.

Annan’s 3rd XV start their league campaign in the Glasgow 3rd XV league with an away game at Ayr.

Annan Colts take on Helensburgh Colts away in their Division 1 game in the Glasgow Under 18 league.

As part of the pre-season build up, which includes squad games against Selkirk (14th August) and Dumfries (22nd August), the club is organising a four team 15-aside tournament at Violetbank on Saturday 25th August. The teams taking part are Annan, Biggar, Aspatria and Penrith with the Violetbank Challenge Trophy up for grabs. ANNAN RFC LOOK FORWARD TO A TOUGH SEASON AHEAD

After a fragmented and extended end to last season, occasioned by the ‘foot and mouth outbreak’, Annan eventually ended up in their highest ever position in the BT National Leagues and the highest placed club in South West Scotland. This coming season Division 1 looks even more mouth-watering for the Annan players and spectators. With those teams promoted from Division 2 – Dunfermline who beat Annan in the BT Shield competition and Cambuslang both looking to progress to the Premiership and Preston Lodge and Gordonians, who were both relegated from Premier 3, stating that they are determined to regain their Premier status and with the remaining teams in the league, Kilmarnock, Ross High, Corstorphine, Trinity Accies and Glenrothes all looking to improve their standings Division 1 of the National Leagues looks like being a cracker.

TRAINING AND COACHING

Whilst light training has been taking place since the end of the season at all levels full training and coaching sessions are now taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the seniors with the Colts and Ladies on Wednesdays. With the 1st XV, 2nd XV, 3rd XV, Colts XV, Under 16 XV, Under 15 XV, Under 14 XV and Under 13 XV’s’ and the Ladies XV all playing league rugby this coming season the Annan coaching staff have been stretched but the acquisition of Paul Minto (former Ayr, Selkirk and Annan player) to the coaching staff has proved a valuable asset to the club’s coaching set up. Paul has joined senior coaches Kenny Hogg, George Jamieson and Shaun McGauchie. With almost 230 league games due to be played across the whole club structure in the coming season new players of all ages are welcome to join the club.

The Colts squad has also gained Kenny White who, having previously coached the seniors, has now joined Ian Black and Michael Tully to add his experience to an improving under 18 squad. The Under 15 squad, who were most unfortunate in having their season curtailed by the foot and mouth outbreak, when they were playing so well. The highlight of their curtailed season was their comprehensive defeat of Marr Under 15s at the Everholm. Marr went on to win the Scottish Under 15 Championship. This team now moves up to Under 16.

THE COMING SEASON

The coming season sees, as mentioned above, the 1st XV playing in Division 1 of the BT National Leagues with the 2nd XV playing in Division 5 on the Glasgow Sports Agency Inter City 2nd XV Leagues and for the first time the 3rd XV playing league rugby in the newly formed Glasgow & District 3rd XV League

Next season sees Annan fielding teams at all levels in the Youth leagues for the first time, a testament to the Club’s blossoming youth policy and the quality of the club’s youth coaches. The Mini section continues to grow and is due to recommence training at the start of the new autumn school term.

The Ladies XV, who also had their league season curtailed, ended up gaining promotion and are looking forward to a tough season ahead in Division 2 of the SWRU Leagues.

THE BT CELLNET CUP

With an additional 32 clubs involved in the Cup competition this season there is no bye for the National Division 1 clubs in Round 1 and Annan have been drawn away to West Dyce RFC from Aberdeen on the 8th September. West Dyce RFC who were formerly Dyce RFC play in the North District Leagues.
