Although this was Annan RFC’s first visit to the Langholm 7’s and despite losing in the first round to Melrose the Annan 7 almost pulled off the shock of the tournament. Not only did they score first against the tournament favourites but were leading 12-7 at half time through two tries by winger Kevin Jones and a Niall Smith conversion. In the second half, despite possibly having the bulk of possession, the tightened up Melrose defences were able to contain the Annan attacks and from some offensive defence Melrose were able to capitalise on spilt ball to retake the lead which they never relinquished to win the tie 24 – 12.
All in all this was a fine sevens performance by the young Annan 7 at their first senior sevens tournament who at no time were overawed by their more illustrious opponents who went on to win the Langholm tournament.
Annan RFC’s Club Player of the Year Award was awarded to Club Vice Captain Andy Renwick. Andy also won the Player’s Player of the Year Award, which was voted on by the Club players at the Annual Dinner Dance held on 26th April. Neil Moffat was awarded the Trophy for the Most Improved Player and Petrina Sidebottom was awarded the Ladies Player of the Year Award.
Annan RFC’s Colts and U16s Awards Night took place in the Clubrooms on Friday 3rd May with Colts Coach Ian Black on the hard but rewarding season undertaken by the Colts squad with Kenny White appraising the Youth Section’s season.
The Club awards were made as follows:
Youth Player of The Year – Michael Griffen
Most Valuable Player – Craig Moffat
Most Influential Player – Andrew Eggleton
Most Improved Player – John Nelson
Colts Player of the Year – Stewart Livingstone
Three players were also awarded their playing jerseys in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the season. They were:
Alan Rae (No 13); Craig McCann (No 10) and Michael Carpenter (No 8).
Would all Colts and Under 16 players please note that training & preparation for season 2002/2003 will commence on Wednesday 5th June at Violetbank (7.00pm start) – both boots and training shoes will be required.
With a very young U18 team this coming season and a very inexperienced U16 side all of the Youth coaches feel that longer preparation is required in order for the teams to fulfil their potential for the coming season.
Coaches Kenny White, Ian Black and Michael Tully would also like to pass on their best wishes to the lads who will be moving on to senior rugby next season. They also ask that all players hand in all DMS tracksuits and training shirts into the Clubhouse in a plastic bag with a note of their name marked for the attention of Ian Black.

The Annan squad shows one or two changes from the one, which was so narrowly defeated by Preston Lodge last weekend. Neil Moffat fills the prop spot instead of his more familiar hooker role; Billy Henderson is back at lock, hopefully recovered from his hand injury, with Stuart Clanachan reverting to his wing forward spot and Colt Alan Rae replacing fellow Colt Andrew Eggleton, who is unavailable, on the wing.

The absence of a warm up was apparent in the opening stages of the tie with a number of tries being easily scored by the Hawick side. However, after the break Annan started to improve somewhat and stemmed the tide of the Hawick attack.
As the tournament was a round robin event, Annan had a chance to warm up properly and to run through some drills in preparation for their next tie against a young Newton Stewart side. The Annan side performed considerably better in this tie with Euan Hay scoring 6 tries and other tries coming from Alistair Graham and Gary Coupland.
Moffat provided the next opposition in a closely fought third tie with the opening try coming from the Moffat side. Although tougher opposition than in the previous tie Annan came through as eventual winners with an ever-improving performance.
With tiredness now setting in Annan faced a Dumfries Colts 7 in the final round robin tie of the day and managed to pull away from a committed opposition to win the final tie to secure second place in the group behind the eventual tournament winners Hawick YM.
All in all the Annan squad performed well and enjoyed the tiring afternoon at sevens with all involved agreeing that watching televised sevens was a more sensible idea. Full details of scorers can be obtained from those who succeeded in crossing the line although Bruce Hay may not wish to be reminded that a touchdown over the 22 does not count!

The Annan 1st XV go down 32-10 to Ross High. Annan were leading at half-time but 2 quick Ross High tries killed the game off. The Annan points came from a Clanny try and 5 points from Baz. Ross High look certain for promotion now to Premier 3 but I don't think it will be long before we play them again........

Annan fielded eight under 16 players who will be eligible to play for next years colts side and the pick of the players on display would have to be stand off Graeme Gemmel who looks a great prospect for next season. Full back Scott McCann also had another fine game taking over the kicking duties from his brother who was ill and unable to play. John Nelson opened the scoring for the visitors after a fine run. Tries from Liam Ogilvie (2), Darren Mann (2), Alan Rae and Michael Carpenter soon followed. Scott McCann added four conversions.
This was a comfortable win for the Annan boys in the end but Dumfries stuck in for the full eighty minutes with notable performances by Jonny Sloan who caught the eye and the excellent Stephen Dreyer. Alan Rae gave another 110% performance with young Michael Pattison and Chris Crichton working extremely hard.

As to the game itself, it seemed to lose its way as well as both teams battled their way to mediocrity. The only highlight being the wining score by standoff Craig Johnstone who crossed the try line to give Annan’s second string a vital win in Division 5 of the Scottish 2nd XV league.
In the second half Lismore upper their play and ran in a further six tries, four of which were converted as Annan struggled to contain the lively visiting backs. Annan scored a conciliation try towards the end of the half when Gerri Robison followed up a loose ball to win the footrace to the line.

Annan at last got their Glasgow Cup tie at Greenock played and with their, albeit unconvincing, win are now through to the quarter finals. The game was never as close as the score suggests. Two Colin McCann penalties and a Keith Nelson try split the sides at the end of the day, but Annan were always in command against a greatly improved Greenock Wanderers side to the one beaten earlier in the season. Annan were buoyed up by the return to the side of Andrew Eggleton who had a superb first half but was starved of good possession and space in the second half.
Pick of the Annan side were John and Keith Nelson. The former working hard throughout the whole game and the latter the powerhouse of the side always looking dangerous in possession of the ball and whose skill and work rate continues to improve with each game.
The quarter final against Hillhead Jordanhill will be played at Violetbank on 23rd March and should be a date for the diary for all fans.

Cartha replied with a well-worked try of their own which the converted. Although well beaten the hosts never gave up. The kicking duties were shared between Ben Hawthorn (5 conversions) and Cameron Houlison (2 conversions). Final Score Cartha QP 4 Annan 39

Annan started the 2nd half a bit more brightly but a very dubious 3rd converted try put Annan 27-0 down. Dubious in the sense that the Dunfermline 'try' scorer was tackled 3 feet short of the try line, a double movement and he was still short, so a triple movement gave him the try! All in all a very poor display by Annan against a very poor Dunfermline team who really only had one tactic which was to chip the ball over the Annan defence at ever stage of the game. They won though so its just sour grapes from me!!
I must thank though the Dunfermline linesman who made my day so much better by being a startling example of a man who knows his stuff. His witty put downs and banter made my day a bit more enjoyable. Cheers mate you really are a credit to your club. No you really are. No really.
