GRIZZLIES EDGE IT AGAIN
23RD MAY 2015

MERRKATS COME CLOSE

Match Report by: Alan Robertson

Although delayed from 3rd May until Saturday due to original date falling foul to the weather the assembled ‘past, present and future’ of Annan RFC once again served up a proverbial feast of rugby entertainment at Violetbank for Annan’s biggest crowd of the season.

On a magnificent summer’s day at Violetbank the one question on everyones’ lips was ‘who’s for summer rugby?’ The only thing missing from the entire occasion was the smell of a barbecue which would have completed the feast on display.

The Meerkats started the brighter of the protagonists on display and produced some fine driving and rucking play in the opening minutes driving the Grizzlies into their own 22. However their enterprise was undone when their backs, in an attempt to throw the ball about and open up the Grizzlies backline, found instead the hands of fullback Kevin Jones who, in his trademark move, intercepted the pass and out sprinted the Meerkat’s defences to run 70 metres to score between the posts. Standoff Gordon Carmichael added the extra 2 points.

The Meerkats hit back almost immediately when awarded a penalty which standoff Cairn Wallace slotted between the sticks. This was followed by a superb try from centre Adam Torbett following a strike against the head from the Meerkats scrum (yes they pushed the Grizzlies off the ball!) with Torbett dancing through the Grizzlies defence to score. Wallace added the extras to take the Meerkats into a 3 point lead. Carmichael with a well struck penalty tied the scores at half time to 10 all.

Not long after the restart Carmichael added a further penalty to retake the lead. The Grizzlies forward play was beginning to gain the upper hand where their bulk and experience began to tell and from a fine period of possession play lock Gary Coupland drove for the line and taking out several defenders set up hooker Scott ‘Pog o’Graham to score. Not to be outdone the Meerkats set up a forward drive of their own and following two penalty awards against Grizzly infringements prop Ronnie Martin powered over to score to bring the Meerkats within 3 points.

The Grizzlies began to exert considerable pressure through their forwards and from a no 8 pick up at the base of a scrum by Rod Kerr slipped a pass to scrum half Barry Graham who powered over to score. The biggest cheer of the day came when, again from a concerted period of pressure in the Meerkat’s 22, the oldest player on the pitch Ian ‘Yogi’ Blair latched onto a pop pass from lock Kieron Watret to cross the whitewash to take the Grizzlies to a healthy 13 point lead.

The Meerkats were not going to lie down however and had the last say in the encounter when following an exciting spell of attack and counter attack Torbett, receiving the ball from a penalty award, cleaved his way, untouched, to the try line to complete the scoring with an converted try.

Final Score: Annan Grizzlies 28 Annan Meerkats 22

All in all this was another excellent advert for the state of rugby at Annan RFC. Despite Annan’s 1st XV being relegated to West 2 for next season there was enough talent on view particularly from the upcoming youngsters to see that the future of the club is in good hands.

Once again it was obvious from some of the older talent on view that several Grizzlies have gone into hibernation a tad early!

Special thanks to the ladies in the ‘Grubber’ who had the foresight to have icecream on tap and to Rab Hendry who came out of retirement to referee the match.

ANNAN TRAVEL TO BEITH IN FINAL LEAGUE GAME OF SEASON

With both Garnock and Kilmarnock winning last weekend Annan are staring down the barrel of relegation from West 1 of the BT Regional leagues.

With only one team facing relegation from West one and Annan currently filling that position Annan would have to beat Garnock by a clear 45 points and Kilmarnock would need to be beaten by a similar score at home to Helensburgh so it looks likely Annan will be playing their rugby in West 2 next season.

It maybe only be one goes down from West 1 (but most likely 2) - no-one is 100% sure - so theres still a chance.....

THE 1STS GET A GREAT WIN
24TH JANUARY 2015

A DESERVED BONUS POINT WIN FOR THE 1ST XV

The 1sts XV took on Allan Glens at Violetbank in a game that Annan had to win to keep their slim chance of avoiding the drop into West 2 alive.

And what a start Annan made with 3 tries (Callum Bell, Sean Haren and Andrew Gunning) in the 1st 25 minutes to take a 19-0 lead. (Craig McCann with 2 conversions)

However Glens hit back just before halftime to take it to 19-7 at the break.

In the second half, after a nervy 15 minutes, a McCann penalty took it to 22-7 but Glens hit back with a well worked try to make it 22-12 and it was game on again!

But it was Annan who scored next thanks to great Sean Haren try to make it 29-12 with 10 mins to go.

But the Annan team kept Glens from scoring again. So a well deserved bonus point win for the 1st XV! Well in!

ANNAN TOO STRONG FOR NEWTON STEWART
15TH NOVEMBER 2014

THE 1ST XV FINALLY GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS

With a number of regular 1st XV players away on Scotland duty at Murrayfield, the previous result versus Newton Stewart in the Shield and Annans poor start to the season, if you were a betting man you would have got good odds on an Annan win.

What do the bookies know!

Annan played some great rugby in the first half and built up a deserved 16-0 lead at halftime thanks to the mighty boot of Captain McCann (3P 1C) and a great try from Sean Haren.

In the second half, an early McCann penalty made it 19-0. The teams traded possession but with 20 to go another McCann penalty made it 22-0.

Despite a late Newton Stewart fightback, it was too little, too late and Annan held on to get the deserved win.

Final Score: Annan 1st XV 22 v Newton Stewart 17

Well played lads!

TRIAL MATCH V DUMFRIES
26TH AUGUST 2014

GOOD WORKOUT FOR BOTH TEAMS

Annan hosted a trial game at Violetbank on Tuesday night at Violetbank against Dumfries and despite the scoreline put in a fine display especially in the middle third of the game.

At half time Annan led their higher ranked opponents 14 – 12 with two tries scored by No 8 Sean Haren and lock Michael Thompson converted by scrum half Craig McCann.

In the final quarter of the game Annan visibly tired against the well drilled visitors who were able to utilise their larger playing squad. Annan’s third try was scored by scrum half Mark Clark with Craig McCann adding a penalty to finish the scoring.

All in all a very useful workout for both teams with Dumfries’s league campaign starting on Saturday and Annan’s starting on 13th September.

ANNAN RFC AGM
1ST JULY 2014

AGM TAKES PLACE

On Tuesday 1st July Annan RFC held their Annual General Meeting in their clubhouse at 17 Bank Street. President Dave Fisher chaired the meeting and reported on the club’s activities over the previous season. It had been a disappointing season overall, after the previous seasons successes for the senior teams. The 1st XV had taken a while to find their feet in West 1 with results improving in the second half of the season. There was great spirit in the 2nd XV but lack of fixtures had been a problem throughout the season but things looked better for the coming season with the team playing in West 2 2nd XV League.

The success of the season was undoubtedly the resurgence of the Youth Section where the tie up with Langholm RFC at some age group levels providing some great fixtures and tournaments. Further encouragement for the club had been the introduction of taster sessions for ladies rugby. He thanked all the coaches and all members who had committed themselves to furthering the progress of the club at all levels.

He also thanked all who had been involved in the off the field activities i.e catering, fundraising, bar activities etc, all sponsors big and small and to all members of his hardworking committee. He also made his now annual plea for more former players to get involved in the running of the club.

He paid special thanks to retiring coach Niall ‘Baz’ Smith, retiring player Kevin Jones and retiring programme producer Ian Gilmour.

The Election of Office Bearers for Season 2014/15:

  • Club Vice President: Neil Wallace
